After reading several of the other reviews, I can agree that the place could benefit from some sprucing up. The house doesn't really stand apart much from the houses around it, and I think a lot of people, myself included, expected a little bit more grandeur (or least some seasonal decoration). It is a very pretty historical home, and I know when things are on the historical register (I'm guessing this is) there is a limit to what people can add, change, redo. However, that doesn't change the fact that something does need to be done. The event itself didn't really meet up to what we were expecting. Ahead of time, they send you your character and some information on other characters, time frame, etc. They tell you the time period so you can dress appropriately. That was fun, but the hostess wasn't dressed to match her character or the time period, which affected the atmosphere (I think). Dinner was just okay, and dessert was probably the Walmart cheese cake sampler cut into smaller, bite-sized portions and put in tiny plastic cups. We were in the smaller room for dinner (they have two rooms for dinner), and there were two tables jammed in there with around twelve people. It isn't really comfortable for people who aren't tiny. Afterward, we all gathered in the larger living room and read our lines. I found myself a little bored and ready for it to be over. All that said, I'm still glad I did it; but for me to do it again, the place would have to be pretty spectacular. Thankfully, I had purchased it from Groupon so I wasn't out too much.
We went to the Stone Lion with 2 other couples from our Small Group (Bible study) and really had a great time. I think the experience depends on the personalities of the other members of the mystery party. We had a lot of fun! We received the info packets for our characters and had a lot of time to shop in order to dress the part. We also watched the recommended movies to get ' into' character. The food was okay, a little too heavy on the 'filler' foods (onions, celery, bell peppers, etc) for our taste. But, good nonetheless. The rooms varied in style and comfort TREMENDOUSLY! But, keep in mind this is a fairly old house that has been renovated, it is NOT a replica!!! We went in the summer and our room was very well air conditioned (almost too much so) and with the satin sheets on the bed, the blanket kept falling off the bed all night (rofl). Each room has its own distinct style and personality. The room was a great size room, but the bathroom was off and away a bit (not down the hall or anything) and it does not have a/c, and no plug for curling irons or blow dryers (which are in the other room, but no mirror). But, I worked around this little hiccup. All in all we would love to go back (with friends, of course) and do a different mystery.
We had an amazing time! When you first arrive everyone if kinda quite but by the time the night is over everyone is taking. The play it's well written and funny, the dinner was just so so but breakfast was wonderful! So bring snacks for after dinner and have a great time!
Only go, if you want to have a good time. If you don't want to dress your part, you will feel awkward.... This is fun with a ton of friends!
It was so much fun! The food was tasty and everyone was very nice! Prepare to stay until about 11pm bring your own drinks for the cocktail party as the Inn does not have a license to serve alcohol.
We love the Murder Mysteries at Stone Lion Inn in Guthrie. Food is delicious and the mystery is a great experience. How often do we adults get the opportunity to "just play"? This experience allowed us to dress up, be someone else and get to try to solve the murder mystery. In ten years my husband and I have come back ten times. Yes, we love it that much!!! The staff is wonderful, but after ten years, they seem more like really good friends. It's fun to get away with that special person or come with a group of family and friends. We have already planned for murder mystery #11. I guess we're addicted!!
Murder mystery was really fun. Dinner was really good. I would suggest not serving a green chili quiche for breakfast especially after we are a green chili soup for dinner. After the murder mystery the other guests let us take a tour of the other homes they were staying in. If you plan on drinking after the murder mystery make sure you bring cups or ice. We noticed that the cottage could use some serious remodeling. There was a hole in the bottom of the wall in the bathroom. Instead of fixing it they put a picture over the hole. The paint is starting to come off the walls and floor. Pictures on the walls are damaged and falling down. There is a big gap under the door so any bugs or cold/hot air can come in/out. We also saw many roaches. We were really expecting a nicer home especially since the owner does restorations. The staff is super nice! Overall we had a great time. Only thing is I suggest doing some improvements to the homes. Looking forward to coming again.
If you are looking for something fun and different to do, this is it!! We had a great time dressing up, having dinner in character, and letting the mystery unfold. What a great night! Food and accommodations were great. The hostess and staff were also great. The Bed and Breakfast was so fun!!! The house is amazing. You will enjoy!!
This was our first murder mystery dinner. It was a blast! Everyone in costumes, we all had our lines! The hostess was wonderful! Dinner was delicious. Four course dinner! We attended the 1948 murder mystery!
The Stone Lion Inn is a place that we cannot wait to return to as we leave each stay. We have been four times and every time is like an escape to a different time. We always have fun and enjoy ourselves. Our only complaint is that time seems to go too fast. The staff is amazing and always makes us feel at home. We cannot wait to return for another visit.
I would have given 5 stars because it was fun but felt other things detracted from the experience. The Inn itself was ok but wasn't really clean. The porch should have been decorated with pumpkins and mums at least. I would hv expected cushions on the benches in a welcoming manner. The gazebo was dirty as were the benches there and were in a sad state of repair. The food was ok but chicken is a cheap meal to fix and at 65 or 70$ per couple I would have expected something a little nicer. The 'play' itself was interesting but for the people that didn't have a lot to say it was kind of boring and I have to admit I disengaged because of it. My character was supposed to interrupt people in an irritating yet concise way and I was told by the woman running it that I needed to stop interrupting, thereby putting a stop to anything for me to do. My husband and I throw these parties at our house and find it more fun to move from one area to another and really I didn't find this much different from what we do as far as people simply reading their parts. Breakfast the next morning was your typical quiche and we listened to the owner tell stories. She was somewhat entertaining. We did get to go up to the 3rd floor and the feeling in that room leaves u knowing that u r not alone there. All in all I am glad we went because now I know that I am not really missing anything when we throw them ourselves though my husband and I no longer take a 'part' as hosting is more than a full time job.
The owner came to Guthrie with a new idea and started a trend. It was at first, so controversial, that it was reviled by some locals as desecrating to the dead, by exciting entertainment, through participatory overnight stays, with sumptuous dinners in a reputedly "haunted house," while the guests themselves were invited to enact an original "murder mystery," which included a visit to a local cemetery. The "attack" on the owner brought attention from far and wide, as her detractors were finally silenced when it was learned that the "murders" were only "staged" for entertainment, not for desecration and visits to the cemetery were curtailed. Excellent food and entertainment in an original 19th Century mansion, which many locals believe truly is haunted, by a young child who died there a hundred years ago from influenza. Always very well done.
This was a fabulous date night and would be fun for a group also. The setting was comfortable, the appetizers, dinner, drinks, etc. were superb! We did not spend the night there however. We had a truly great time and the hostess was talented in organizing and managing a large group. We will definitely go again. Please do read your parts and know the story line in advance as it makes it more fun for everyone. Try to dress the part but no need to spend a lot of money. This event is an asset to have in Oklahoma! Thank you!
We attended a murder mystery at the Stone Lion Inn on Saturday 6/15/13 and had a blast! This was the 3rd mystery we have tried to solve at the Stone Lion Inn and they are always a lot of fun. The Stone Lion Inn goes all out with the atmosphere, food, and of course, the mystery. We did not stay the night this time around but have in the past and enjoyed our time over night as well as the stories at breakfast the next morning. We highly recommend attending one of the mystery dinners in the future and we will be sure to visit the Stone Lion Inn again!
