Nice park to have a family reunion or wedding reception. Play areas for children and a nice walkway along the waterfront.
This park is big n a good place to have a BBQ or a picnic with family n friends. Let the kids roam around n play. Good times here. Or have business or church events.
We headed up here last week when the weather was nice. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many fun places and things to do and see. We played at the splash pad, which is so much fun, played on the many playgrounds and had a great time. There were lots of activities that we didn't get to do, but we would possibly return. There was also a small teaching garden next to the splash pad, that had some art and science activities going. My kids loved it. I took away a star because we could not bring our dogs (bummer), and for some odd reason, my 4 1/2 year old, fully potty trained child was not allowed in the lake at all. 5 and up only?! That was frustrating, and we may or may not return to this place just because of that. It wasn't fair to him that my son's older brother could swim but he couldn't.
I've been to this park a number of times over the past 10 years, as it is where the organization I work for has their annual member picnic. I've not spent much time exploring it, and the park is VERY large, and, well, I was never there just for the sake of playing/general relaxation, but the little bit I've experienced indicates to me that it is a great place for a picnic, eating and chatting with workmates. It is a great place in terms of location as well, being just a short drive from downtown Portland, OR, all of about a 20 minute drive. It's also adjacent to the Columbia River if you want to explore the river as well. You can also rent a boat or go fishing in the lake, if that's what attracts you. Boat rentals are available at the lake, or you can bring your own.
The scenery is fantastic. The park is well groomed and maintained. Lots to do for all ages including a fun filled water fountain with lots of spraying nozzles and such for little ones. The water quality seems a bit poor with rumors of algae and bacterial blooms.
I'd been away from the area for awhile and went over to Blue Lake park on a weekday hoping to have a relaxed walk with my dog on a leash. No dogs allowed, apparently. Also, there was a charge. I went in turned around and left.
Visited today and couldn't understand why the park wasn't jammed, but very glad that no one seems to know this is here. If I had young kids I would be here every day in the summer. For a $5 entry per car there is a swimming beach, a really cool water spray area with all kinds of different apparatus that the kids who were there seemed to love. There is also a really cool interactive garden that parents could go through with their kids, a place to rent paddleboats, a fishing area, canoe rentals, volleyball, horseshoes, a gorgeous wetlands area with some really cool native memorial stonework and carved pillars. There were picnic tables scattered all over the place, along with a number of large open pavilions that can be reserved. There was even a small archery range at the end of the park. It shady and beautiful, but it also has lots of open meadow areas that would be perfect for soccer or other games. There is also a frisbee golf course. I ask again...why isn't this place jammed every day of the week? I'm glad it wasn't, because we were able to sit on a bench overlooking the lake, watch people canoe by, eat our picnic lunch, and soak up the peace and quiet. LOVE this place!
This park is just right for group or family picnic activities...It has a designated swimming area (DO NOT DRINK THE LAKE WATER) and boat pedal paddling rides in the lake...There are volleyball/basketball courts, a space big enough for a soccer or a baseball field for sports minded and active people....Some picnic area by the lake can be occupied by the first come first serve basis- just wake up early and be at the gate before the park opens...Of course you can definitely reserve your spot by calling Park & Recreation office few months before your actual date of use...Covered picnic areas are also available for rent...Please bring a spare jacket with you if you planned to be there until sundown...Lastly, fireworks are lighted during the Fourth of July celebration until further notice...
Unfortunately we didn't bring a lunch and though the park was crowded with people and the weather hot and sunny, the food concession stand wasn't open! What a bummer! So we were not able to stay, but had to bicycle on to where we could find food.
