Be forewarned--the falls are nothing spectacular--so if you're a tourist and think you're going to see a wonderful waterfall and travel out of your way to get here you might want to reconsider. However, if you are aware of their cultural significance to the local tribes and come during a season when the tribes are fishing it is an interesting place to visit. But to appreciate it you'll have to do your homework.
The falls were a sight to see, don't miss this attraction! We saw some wildlife which made this experience very exctiging. We felt like we traveled back in time to the days of the Old West. You really get a sense of history, and can almost image what life was like for the Indians that inhabit this area now and in the past.
The falls and associated rocky gorge are reserved for Native American fishing, so the parking available is restricted to them. As a result, we drove past, enjoying the view of the falls and the fishing platforms, but we did not find a place to park for extended viewing.
Watched men fishing on White R., took pics of the falls, watched a heron looking for fish, and crossed Sherars bridge.
This area has got that indian history like no other. Just looking at the falls and seeing the fishing platforms that the Indians use to fish still tell a story visually. Some traditions never change because they still work.
Sherars Falls near Maupin on Highway 216 is quite a sight along the normally serene Deschutes River. Roaring white water in a narrow basalt channel is a sight. Perched on rickety wooden platforms above the tumult are Native Americans with long poles and nets, fishing for salmon like their ancestors for hundreds, likely thousands of years before.
Be sure to take the full day rafting trip with All Star so that you can see Sherars Falls. It's rated a 6 so you go around it but it's a great sight to see!
