This winery is pretty impressive. We couldn't say that every wine thrilled us, but enough of them did. And there were a lot of wines to taste. These guys have a huge repertoire! The staff were really friendly and knew the wines and the vineyards the grapes come from very well. They had a good handle on the wine making process and gave us great explanations of each wine and how it was made. We spent well over an hour talking and tasting and describing each wine. We really like this place.
My wife and I have been members of the wine club here for a long time. John was one of the first winemakers to emphasize Rhone varietals in California. We love the Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Roussane and Viognier he also makes a flinty Sauvignon Blanc that is great with fish. The Fleur de Montagne is one of the best blends you'll find, subtle flavors and a nose to die for.
I live around here, so I'm partial to our Pleasant Valley wineries. Nevertheless, John and Barbara are not only among the original EDC wine pioneers, they are Rhone grape variety pioneers in the USA, having planted some of the first commercial blocks of Syrah in the 1970s. John's wine are the hallmark of high-level consistency. His Viognier (a Rhone white) is known worldwide, and not to be missed. The outside picnic area has a view of the Sierra Nevada range, and is a perfect destination for visitors to the EDC wine country.
We spent a Saturday tasting wines wine on Pleasant Valley Rd. This winery has a nice tasting room with good wines. It would be great on a hot day to taste and then picnic under the huge trees with view of the Sierras.
We recently stopped by this winery when looking for "something to do" over Labor Day. I enjoy the quaintness and simplicity of some of the older foothill wineries, and Sierra Vista in now on that list. The tasting room is small and simple and offers some nice merchandise. Most importantly, are the many wonderful wines produced by this little gem of a winery.Quite frankly, there wasn't a wine on their menu that I DIDN'T like... Granted.. I am a "consumer", but I have been tasting wine in N. CA and other regions of the world for almost 30 years, so I have been able to develop some "likes" and "dislikes" throughout the years. I especially enjoyed the Chardonnay's, as well as the Cab's, zin's, and Syrah's...oh, and the dessert wine. I believe there is truly something for everyone at Sierra Vista Winery.I was so impressed by the quality and prices of the wine, that I joined their wine club. They offer a variety of events, including barrel tasting, wine and cheese pairings, and other events which I look forward to enjoying in the future. Sierra Vista doesn't go for the glitz, but rather puts their resources and efforts into producing a wide variety of wines at a great price..all delivered in a pleasant setting with great service. All in all, it is a delightful way to experience some great wine and make some new friends.
Featuring estate-grown varietals and blends, Sierra Vista has value-priced wines from El Dorado County including Zin, Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, and Cabernet. Their GSM blend, Fleur de Montagne and their reserve Syrah were our favorites, but the good news is that you have a lot of choices.
Great place to have a picnic, good wine & friendly staff.
This is one of the early wineries in the El Dorado region. It sits on top of hillside with a fantastic view of the Sierra. Very friendly staff in the tasting room. It's a 'must stop' location for several of our friends when they come to visit.
The tasting room was a bit dull, but the wine was superb. Grenache is a tasty red along the Sierra wine trail and especially tasty at this pit stop. Though I'm normally not a red person, these reds impressed me. The atmosphere seemed so-so, but I'll give the establishment the benefit of the doubt as there weren't many other visitors.
