I took my 2 1/2 year old and she absolutely loved it. She played for 2 hours and could have played for many more if we didn't leave to play at the beach. The entry fee is for all day even if you leave and come back. I agree it's not the cleanest place, but it is completely kid friendly. Overall I loved it.
We were traveling and told this was THE place to go to in Santa Maria if you have a young family. Walking in we were greeted with colorful interior. The kids were so happy to be somewhere just for them. However, it became evident the person behind the desk didn't know much about the facility. We paid $8 per child and $4 per adult (2 and under free). The Cons: Its dirty. The carpet in the kids area looks well love. The Lego table had funk on it. The kitchen toys and aprons looked liked they needed a good scrubbing and laundering. Craft table have a days worth of 1/2 made discarded kids projects to work around. There was dust and dirt on the floor (yes I realize there is a planting station-that's a pro!). A few things were broken. It was hot and stuffy. While the rules are posted on almost every surface, it was had to find seating close to every play area. We have a little baby which made it uncomfortable to be on top of my kids while they played. There was only one staff member for the first hour and a half we were there. A couple more can from the back but none were hands on or redirecting the kids. Very front desk focused. The Pros: that have a lot of things to do! My kindergarten and elementary aged kids loved it. Ocean soft play area for tots. Lots of imaginary play area... Shopping, farming, diner, banker, fishing, store, etc. Walking keyboard, microscope, organ, craft table, planting and garden center(take home a plant), wall climbing and a indoor climbing play area to occupy their minds and burn energy. Overall the kids had fun. If I had a crawling or under 3 I would think twice before visiting due to my germ and dirt issues.
Just a wonderful place for your little ones to explore! VISUAL, TACTILE &AUDITORY as well as dramatic play. I am the childcare field and have taken many ids to the Discovery Museum.
The museum is one of the best buys in Santa Maria. Be sure to look closely at the John Deere tractor -- What a great restoration of yester-year's best. Allow at least two hours for this attraction because it is a hands-on package. Walk next door to the old Coke building and stroll through it too.
