I prayed for a foot of new powder, we got one inch. Did not work well with cross country skis. So on our second time, we got to the parking lot in about 50min, at 2.5 mile hike through the snow and ice. Then we took the 1/4 mile hike from parking lot to the view point. WOW!!!! We then went on the ridge trail, which starts at the view point, also Excellent. A must that most visitor do not attempt.
Beautiful view out over Kings Canyon. You can see dozens of miles (furthest I could see that day was 36) to many of the peaks in the Sierra Nevada range. There is a great sign at the top which tells you what you are looking at and helps you identify the different peaks. They are making this handicap accessible, so the path is now paved up from the parking lot.
This short paved (wheelchair accessible) hike to a magnificent lookout over the triple divide area is well worth the short drive. The road is typically twisted and is one lane for much of the way so careful driving is indicated. Very large vehicles might have some trouble. The lookout is reached by a short (less than one mile) hike up to a well-signed area with benches. This trail has been recently refurbished and is suitable for any level of walker.
Panoramic Point was one of the highlights of our visit to the park. The views of the distant mountains were amazing. Got some excellent pictures.
We stopped in at the information desk and talked to the Park Ranger behind the desk who suggested this stop. We probably would not have found this on our own. Drive up is on a very narrow, poorly paved windy road that leads to a good sized parking area. Short walk on pathway to a panoramic lookout. Up to this point, it is handicap accessible. Trail continues further but we stayed to enjoy the lookout and view. Had a picnic here and relaxed. Nice easy stop to enjoy.
We decided to visit Panoramic Point the morning we were leaving. I am so glad that we didn't miss it! The view is fantastic and when we went there was no one else around. Make sure to visit this site at some point on your trip - you won't regret it!
We traveled here in the dark with a guide for some stargazing, story telling and a fun night of meteor spotting! Our guide was most enthusiastic as she showed us how to star hop ('Arc to Arcturus' from the topmost star of the handle of Ursa Major) and how the stars change with the seasons. We were lucky to see a few meteors as well despite being at the tail end (ha ha) of the shower. Most impressive for me was the hazy grey appearance of our own luxurious Milky Way! Looking at our own galaxy (and seeing Andromeda as well!) was riveting.
Turn right just before you get to John Muir Lodge, down a little paved, unmarked road, that you wonder whether or not is the right road. The winding road takes you to Panoramic Point-an almost complete view of the mountains and valley-a true panorama. Nice picnic tables (we had lunch) rest rooms, newer paved trails to the top. (kinda steep but with switchbacks). And a beautiful view in front of you. We went during the day, but I'm betting this would be a great place to see the sunset or the stars. Kinda out of the way, but worth the time to find it.
Was unaware of this on our first visit but made sure we drove up here our last morning on the way to Yosemite. Road is narrow with some tight curves, but paved and not a lot of traffic, unlike Grant Village that you go thru to get here. Paved trail with a couple of nice benches going up and some nice signs showing the mtns you view as you look out over the park and Hume Lake I think it is.
One of the best spots to admire the nature of this National Park. The place is great and is not that difficult to reach. Most of the times you are gonna be alone there so try to be careful and aware of your sourroundings. The view is breathtaking and unique so enjoy it. The car trail to the place is not that difficult and after the parking lot is just a small hike of less than 10 minutes up. Every second there worth it! So plan around it!
Is accessible to handicapped by a paved walk but it is very steep. Worth the climb to the top. Be sure to bring your camera.
This point is right at the start of the scenic byway and is a good indication of things to come... its a short drive from the visitor center. The road is narrow with just one lane. The views from this point are very good ... it shows most of the highest peaks in the region and a lot of them are still snow covered...It is worth the short drive...
The small windy road leading to Panoramic Point is located behind Grant Grove Village next to John Muir Lodge. The entrance to the Panoramic Point road starts next to the John Muir Lodge driveway (turn left into the Lodge or right for the road to the Point). It is about a 2 mile drive to the top. Drive slowly, especially when you meet another car coming towards you. I went with my wife in late July and we both really enjoyed the great view from the top. My wife was a little nervous driving on the skinny, windy road to the top (especially when we were on the outside edge of the road). There is a great view of Kings Canyon and various mountains from the top. Signs at the top point out the mountain names in the distance. After driving to the parking lot near the top you have to walk up a steep, paved 300 yard hiking path to Panoramic Point. The climb is a little steep and you are at a higher altitude so the hike is a little harder than it looks.Panoramic Point is a must see attraction if you are staying at Grant Grove Village or the surrounding area. The views are great and it does not take that much time to drive to the parking lot and then walk up to the top. The view is great but it is not as good as the view from Moro Rock (but Moro Rock is a much harder climb).
After Little Baldy Trail (be sure to go all the way to the end), this was the best view we experienced. And no one else around!
