This is an interesting museum about the inventor of Mr. Bubbles, and shows exactly what can be accomplished in American with an entrepreneurial spirit. We did not allow enough time to watch the film but enjoyed the detailed displays very much. You can't beat the price.
We found this gem by accident. Harold Schafer, inventor of Mr. Bubbles (among many other things), and father of the Medora Musical, has a very nice center dedicated to him. And.....unlike the majority of attractions in tourist-centered Medora, this one is free!
It is completely devoted to Harold Schafer and his wife. I owned most of the town, invented Mr. Bubble. You watch an 8 minute video, then tour the museum. Means more if you are an American or from North Dakota.
Visit the home of the man who invented many of the products you grew up with. Curious what Mr. Schafer did? Guess you'll just have to stop in and see for yourself!!
I would not make this a priority. But if you have time it is interesting to learn about the generous entrepreneur (and his lovely wife) who saved this small town. Think of John D. Rockefeller and Williamsburg, VA, on a smaller scale...
The Harold Schafer Heritage Center is important to understanding how modern Medora came to be. I grew up in South Dakota but was not familiar with the story of the Gold Seal man and the guy who brought me Mr. Bubble!
Everyone who enjoys Medora should know that the town is successful because of this man and his wife, Sheila. It is a free museum (can't beat that) full of really interesting facts about the Schafer family. Worth the time to find out how the modern Medora came to be.
There are a couple 5 minute videos about Harold and his wife Sheila that are ok. The old TV show of Harold appearing on What's My Line was entertaining to those of us who remember the show, but other than that it is just a fancy way to brag about Harold Shafer. It is worth the price of admission, though. (Free)
As a child I lived two years in Bismarck, ND and knew the name "Harold Schafer". But as an adult I enjoyed learning about his life through the interesting film and all the "period pieces" of memorabilia. Glad that I wandered into the place!
This attraction was free and quite informative. We especially enjoyed the short movie full of historical information on Mr. Schafer.
I saw all these pink boxes of Mr. Bubble when I built the set and asked why so many? Then I learned that Harold Schafer had helped to restore Medora, ND. That helps our area and travelors who are heading out to Yellowstone.
The museum pays tribute to the life of Mr. Harold Schafer. It includes relics from his personal life, but mostly his business, the Gold Seal Brand. The best part is all the Mr. Bubble products that are on display, since I grew up with Mr. Bubble, it was very reminiscent for me. His hand-carved desk, awards, and many honorary degrees are also on display. The museum is professionally done and is easy to navigate. It is a good half hour or so out of the Medora sun and with the price tag of FREE, an affordable break. Interesting, but not thrilling.
