Great place to visit, fish, and just plain hang out---a lot of lake to see and fish---I like catching perch and walleye--which this lake has plenty of---there are eating joints at some of the lake crossings ---great place
This lake has interesting fishing, with almost constant changing contours and depths. Also very scenic, with rolling hills, cattle, and other interesting stuff. Did catch white bass, walleye and bass. No Northern Pike. Will fish again given the chance.
Easy access to boat ramps. Saw lots of people out in boats for pleasure, fishing, and water sports. Swimming area was very small. Water was quite muddy. We were told it was river fed and behind a dam which may account for that. Noticed cattle standing in the water in several places so have to wonder about the water quality and safety to swim. By the same token, how safe is the fish to eat! Have no desire to go back there!
We found our way down the west side of the lake to Pete's Resort. For a whole buck apiece, my wife and I fished from the fishing dock and caught several smallish (1 lb.) fish. It was a nice setting, the dock had a bench to sit down and a very scenic view. People were swimming a ways down the shore and everyone seemed to really enjoy this nice little place. We'll be back.
Good camping and fishing, but beware of the bullheads - and big ones! Plus, the lake turns over and starts to stink. BUT, it's a fun lake and plenty of real estate to have some fun and not feel crowded.
I grew up a few miles from Lake Ashtabula in the 50's. Swam, fished, boated and drove my car on the ice in the winter. Helped build the dance and roller skating hall at Siblys Trail, a new town on the lake. It is the main recreation area for that part of ND. Last visited the area in 2008, not 2010 and will go again in 2012. Its worth the stop if you are passing through Valley City.
