It's a great place to take the Grandchild and watch them play on the toys, swings, and things for young kids.
The main attraction here seems to have nothing to do with the dam: a beautiful, inviting, bucolic, grassy expanse featuring a number of playgrounds with attractive play apparatus, picnic tables, and grills. There is ample grassy space for a casual game of soccer or Frisbee, and a basketball court. There is also a wading pool but it was closed for the season when we visited. Seems it would be a great place for a family to have a picnic. There is a reservable shelter that would be great for a family reunion or other such group event. There are restrooms and several water faucets. There is an overlook of the dam, but the dam produces a reservoir only during times of flood and hence is just not very interesting. There is a hiking trail, but seriously, if you're this close to Mt. Rainier you may as well go to Mt. Rainier for hiking. What is rather odd is that the facility is open limited hours, and in the off-season it is open on weekdays but not weekends (shouldn't it be the reverse?). However, even when the place is closed, you can still hike in from a small parking lot about a half mile down the road. It does not appear to be "illegal" to be on the playground/ picnic grounds when the park is officially closed. We were there in a beautiful sunny, warm, early October Saturday and there were only 4 other cars present. The place also seems to be dog-friendly.
we take great interest on how things really got done in the past, before all the environmental issues. we like having water to drink and power
We took our Grandaughters this summer for a picnic. I had no idea that the water feature, with water fall, would be so fun for them. It is a beautiful place with rest rooms, picnic tables, and covered areas, that one can reserve. It is very family friendly, with a play area, water feature, and raised BBQ's.The girls had a great time and so did we. There are trails to walk and a look out to walk to. People are friendly and the atmosphere was as sunny as the weather. We will be bringing them back! FYI, it can be windy, so always bring a jacket...
Mud Mountain is a great destination for bicyclers to gather, family picnics or just pass through for the scenic vistas. I especially like that it's very well maintained, rarely crowded and has some great views of the White River and surrounding areas.
Family picnics are usually held here ! its beautiful and has a great environment! Grew up going there each spring!
Good, short hike with no view. Some graffiti on the overlook which was very disappointing. It is a nice clean park, though. Good place for a quiet picnic.
Nice playground for kids and a water feature, the water is only a foot or so deep. It's crowded on nice weekends but, not to bad. You can take a hike which isn't to hard. It's very beautiful there and not to far from Enumclaw.
After the kids are back in school and the vacationing relations have been seen safely on their way home, treat yourself to some peace and quiet at Mud Mountain Dam. The park is off the main track, the drive up will help you shake off whatever stress might be tightening your shoulders. Here are paved walkways and well-groomed forest trails, scenic vistas made more beautiful by the solitude and the changing of the seasons. Bring a picnic lunch (even if you are coming by yourself) and sit at one of the many picnic tables or benches along the trail and just be. Listen to the sound of the wind in the trees, the birds, the murmur of water, all the sounds of the world unplugged. It is serene, and green, and oh, so close at hand.
Mud mountain dam is worth visiting. Mud Mountain Dam is a flood control dam protecting the lower White and Puyallup River valleys from flooding by holding back water from heavy rains and melting snow in its reservoir. Upon completion in 1948, Mud Mountain Dam was the highest rock and earth-filled dam in the world. The Army Corp of Engineers has constructed a very nice park above the dam. Visitors to the facility can view the dam, picnic, hike, bike or ride their horses in a scenic woodland setting. Please check the web site for hours as they change throughout the year. We particularly like to stop during the spring runoff as the roar of the water can be quite impressive.
This is an average hike with little or no elevation gain. Perfect for kids or hiking with dogs. It only takes a few hours so you can get in a day hike with no problem. There were a few people out on the day (weekend) we went.
I have had the wyatt wilson motorcycle ride there the last 4yrs It has been just been a great place to go to lots of parking, very well kept park ,,,,,,,great place,,,,,,Dan Wilson
I have very fond memories of visiting mud mountain dam when I was a child. Definitely take your children there, you will create memories they will never forget!
Great place to picnic or have a reunion. Toys to play on for the kids and areas for adult. Trails for hikes.
It is a very long hike for this old person, but it is fun and informational.
