Wonderfully generous and eccentric family willing to share all their knowledge of lavender while providing a free tour of their delightful grounds. We climbed up the tree house and viewed the grounds, wandered about, met their chickens and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Be sure to purchase the Lavender soap, it's hand made and amazing. I also purchased lavender sachets and a jam. Their prices are fair and it's a great way to contribute to a unique and wonderful, local business.
"Lavender Farm," though accurate, is also misleading in the case of the Painted Lady Lavender Farm in Ilwaco, WA. I fell in love with this enchanting pocket in the forest. From Highway 101, all you see is a sign and "Open" flags, but once you make it down the driveway and through the iron gates you will soon realize that lavender is only the beginning of what this place has to offer year round. A guided tour, many varieties of edible plants, quiet nooks and crannies if you want to lose yourself among the fairies (no joke!), botchy ball (I think I spelled that right), and AMAZING hosts!Last year, the Painted Lady hosted the first annual Beach Belly Dance Festival. What an incredible experience! Music, dancing, food, vendors, it was like a party all day! They had belly dance troupes Tres Chic Mystique, Mandala Tribe, and of course the Beach Bellies themselves! Portland's Phlame Crew even came and did a fire show! The weekend was almost surreal, and they're doing it again this year! Find Festival Registration forms at http://www.beachbellydancestudio.com/festivalregistration.htm if you want to participate this year; the more the merrier! There's no fee to get into the Lavender Farm on a daily basis, but there will be tickets sold at the gate for the Festival this year. $10.00/person/day, come check it out!
This was a fun place and the owners are the most knowledgeable people I've ever met when it comes to Lavender. The plants I bought are doing great and enjoyed the seasonings.
Yesterday we went to the market in Astoria and then ventured straight north on 101 with our 3 year old grand daughter - not sure what adventure we would find, and the highlight was Painted Lady Lavender Farm! We passed it first, but after seeing the "Open" flags, we turned around and then spent several hours there! We climbed a tree house, sat in one of the most enchanted gazebos ever and our girl got to see so many animals - even petting some and taking some quail eggs home. We bought some home made Voilet Jelly and some Lemon Lavender Delight! I learned so much about many trees and plants and got several ideas for my own garden. We all had a wonderful time - the gentleman who owns and has created this place was so gracious and informative. We plan to return even though we live a couple of hundred miles away.
My friend and I came across the farm while driving down Coastal 101 from Seattle to Portland. As soon as we passed the sign, we knew we had to turn around and go back. The owner guides the tour himself and is very knowledgable about the landscape and climate and his farm. The farmer grows over 15 varieties lavender and mint and other herbs, and plucks a sample in each patch for you to take home. You will be amazed the amount of love and dedication the farmer and his wife have put into their home farm. If I'm ever in this area of Washington again, I will certainly return.
I appreciated the time and detail of information given to us on the tour. There was a lot more THERE than I expected. Lavender farm meant just lavender to me. So getting to enjoy the many other additional items/buildings/plants was definitely a positive plus.
