Cattle Point was a beautiful area with amazing views! We enjoyed hiking along the coast and on the beach and saw some incredible wildlife- red fox, tons of bunnies and a family of bald eagles up close. There was a group of kids on a school trip exploring on the rocks at low tide near the lighthouse but otherwise we didn't see a soul in this area of the island. Very quiet and peaceful- nice place to sit and enjoy the view!!! Oh, and you may not want to rely on the restroom facilities- it didn't look like it had been serviced in awhile...we waited until our next stop;)
This tip of San Juan Island is peaceful yet thrilling in that the views are expansive, the water swift, the wildlife unspoiled (eagles, birds, fox, whales sometimes) and the prospect of many other islands and the mainland looking eastward is so peaceful. Bring a picnic to the shelter and few tables or just a book to stake out a quiet spot on the rocks. The South Beach just to the west is great too, but this is my quiet spot of choice.
Nice quiet days usually not a lot of people around nice to explore and take pictures. Be careful walking down to the beach. Enjoyed just a day me and my husband had an awesome picnic. Walking on the edge of the water watching the ducks and the one harbor seal that was watching us pretty closely. One or two people walking their dogs. This is just one of the really quiet days we had.
Amazing and totally private......noone else was on the beach! It was a beautiful day in October and not a cloud in the sky!
Cattle point is a large meadowed knoll that has a panoramic view of the southern end of the island, In the 1800s this point was the site of an army encampment at a time that Britain & the U.S. were negotiating the US/Canadian boundary treaty. There was brief but largely averted military action. A reproduction of the original fort is being constructed. Given the wonderful vistas, this is a terrific place to a stroll or hike & have a picnic lunch.
did not see any Orcas that day but cattle point was a good spot to stop and have lunch while touring the island
We drove out to Cattle Point to see the lighthouse. We walked up to it and realized it was boarded up, unused, and a little sad looking. Views were amazing though. I proposed to my girlfriend in front of this lighthouse. It may not be attractive, but we will forever love it.
We loved the views out to Cattle Point. We had views of Mt. Baker and the driftwood on South Beach. Do yourself a favor and make the drive out here. If you stay, they do ask for you to post a DIscover Pass (if you have one for your dash) or pay for parking.
Alas, the weather was overcast and foggy during our visit to Cattle Point, but it was interesting nonetheless. Save it for the afternoon, as it's obvious the views would be fantastic when the sun is out.
Gorgeous look out and a red tail fox came straight up to us. Amazing! There are picnic tables to enjoy a nice meal and beverage of your choice while the sun sets.
Cattle Point is a great place to view the Olympic Range across the Strait of Juan de Fuca, to see wild foxes that prey on the overpopulation of rabbits that life in "towns" of dozens of burrows. Go down to the shore to beach comb along the longest stretch of sand on the island, and clamber over the immense piles of driftwood seeking little natural treasures and great photos.
On this new Historic Momument Site is a lighthouse that sits high on a cliff. The drive along the coast is lovely. The open fields are alive with wildlife. Worth the trip.
