Trains always fascinate children so this museum is a real go for children. Lots of "big stuff" to look at and learn about. Nicely located and plenty of parking. Of course the kids like the outdoor stuff, but there is indoor stuff for us adults. The volunteers are knowledgeable.
We drove about 4 hours to attend and were pleasantly surprised. The grandboys had a ball. Lots of hands on things to do, wish there had been more vendors. The vendor that had lemonade and kettle corn, rocked it. The volunteers went out of their way to ensure everyone had a great time. The museum is outstanding! Thank you, NPRM!
This museum has unique and different displays of historic railroad memorabilia. They offer an inside display and an outdoors display area. The station has recently been refurbished and is a terrific example of an early station. The outside display features rolling stock and locomotives. We also were able to gain access to the workshop where a locomotive is in the process of being refurbished. Excellent for railroad buffs and anyone interested in historic places.
Read the reviews here at Tripadvisor for this museum. There is a lot of old railroad memorabilia. We found that many of the items had no tag or no information attached. There were some old broken down train cars outside, again without any real information as to what you were looking at or other information. Took about ten minutes to see all of the displays. I was OK with the $5.00 per person to get in, but they need to put more effort into improving the experience. Sorry, don't mean to be harsh, and I know this is a volunteer labor of love, but it needs more work.
We had a lot of fun there. It is right on the train tracks and we got to see a 100 car train come by right in front of us. Lots of old antiques and pictures to look at.
This has to be one of the best Railway Museum that I have seen, and I have been to quiet a few.Nice display that young people can actually see the Upper and lower Sleeping Births ,Dinner car,Very detailed
The Northern Pacific Railway Museum is a real gem in Toppenish. I don't think I would stop in for a casual visit but they have frequent special events that are for kids and those are excellent. As an example they have a christmas train ride where you board at the station, ride a short distance and get off the train at the "north pole" where you can visit with santa and get your picture taken. They have many similar events for all of the major holidays. The displays inside the museum are nice and they bring in extra items for christmas such as large model trail layouts. Be careful to look and not touch though as they are very expensive models and the owners are very protective. Out in what I would call the barn they have a steam engine that they have been restoring for years. It is fun to stop in and see what progress they are making. This is a very active group of people that are always doing something interesting. Check their website and stop in for a special occasion.
A knowledgeable voluunteer gave a very interesting tour. This is a good activity for kids who are "into" cars, trucks, trains, etc.
This small museum was well worth a visit. The museum starts with general rail displays, then moves outside where there are old trains, stop signals, and other train-related displays, complete with informative descriptions. Next, back inside there are various displays with old railway advertisements, china, menus, and other pieces from rail history. The museum is housed in an old train station. This museum was not large, but was enjoyable to walk around and informative. I especially enjoyed learning about a time when rail was a predomiant form of leisure and commercial transportation. Even if you are not particularly interested in trains themselves, you still can enjoy this museum.
