Our troop went up for wilderness camping, pioneering and emergency preparedness. It was not busy and there was plenty of space to teach and practice skills. Several went trail biking as well. Clean, convenient, reasonably priced. Thanks.

We visited this state park on Labor Day weekend of 2014. The campground is on the shores of the beautiful Lake Thurmond and a good portion of the sites (especially in lower loop 2) have a view of the lake or are on the lake edge. Sites are fairly small, but our drive through site had a nice view of the lake and enough room for a tent beside our 23 foot trailer. This does not appear to be much of an RV park, most campers are tent campers and pop-up campers and some travel trailers. Our site was 84 and I while it is not right on the lake, it has a very nice view of the lake. We rented a nice big pontoon at Savannah Lakes Marina, only a few miles from our campground and had a great day exploring the lake. The pros: beautiful lake. The cons: Buildings such as shower houses are kept clean but quite outdated. The campground is almost exclusively pine trees with no grass, and the roads throughout the campground are dirt so it can be rather dusty. In addition, since they are pine trees, there is no privacy between campsites. Campsites are small. The biggest con was that in the nearby town of McCormick, there is pretty much nothing to do. Half of the store fronts are empty, and there are a few restaurants and shops but sort of a sleepy town. I would recommend this for someone who wants to spend time on the lake, or just hang out at the campground, which is what everyone there tended to do. Also, we are golfers and there are two very nice semi-private golf courses within minutes of the campground. We golfed at Monticello (its sister course is Tara) and it was quite nice. Even though the golfing and boating was great, I doubt I'd return. Too outdated for me and in the middle of nowhere.
