South Dakota received 6-7 inches of snow, and we weren't prepared for it. What to do on a snowy gray day in early September? Spearfish Canyon covered with snow was stunning, but then we found ourselves in Spearfish and really hadn't planned on visiting the town. We happened to remember there was a gallery of some sorts mentioned in the guidebooks. Why not check it out? When we found ourselves on a gravel road with our fingers crossed that we were headed the right direction, we almost changed our minds. And when we did find the gallery, we almost changed them again because there were no other cars in the parking lot. How awkward to be the only people there, right? Wrong. We literally gasped when we walked into the gallery. We had read that the artist, Dick Termes, painted on spheres, but didn't truly understand the thinking behind his technique. One woman was staffing the gallery and I'm embarrassed to admit we didn't ask her name because she spent easily a half hour with us, explaining the six-point painting system and showing us examples of how Termes used it on a variety of subjects. She was patient when we asked question after question about this unique art.Whether you have an engineering or mathematical or whimsical or artistic or creative or scientific or any other kind of interest out there, you'll find a piece that perfectly speaks to you. Sound too vague? Sorry, but words fail. I remember reading about the art work, but not really "getting it" from the guidebook descriptions. This is something you truly have to see to understand and appreciate. Termes had pieces for serious art collectors as well as items children would enjoy. He "doodles" ideas on Christmas ornaments, so that made a perfect souvenir for us. Honestly, I can't emphasize enough how much anyone would enjoy this gallery. After all the schlocky billboard-blasting of nearly every other Black Hills attraction, this impressive and classy experience stands out by far.

Beautiful location in Spearfish. The gallery is interesting and beautiful. There are many amazing spheres completed by Dick Termes, a well known Black Hills artist. I picked up a small beautiful piece of art, and enjoyed spending time admiring the spheres.

About two miles from Spearfish is a charming building housing the Termesphere Gallery. Dick Termes, internationally known artist, invented termispheres which are painted globes which hang from the ceiling. There are hundreds, each one unique. The woman working in the gallery was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful in explaining the six-point perspective. She also related many interesting stories about the artist and the spheres. Dick Termes was just inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. The Termisphere Gallery is a fascinating place, not to be missed. We plan to go back next summer.

This out of the way gallery and gift shop is a gem. The artists work was explained and demonstrated by the very personable staff and we left feeling like we were insiders. Don't be afraid of the dirt road you must take to get there - it's worth it!

I fell in love with these pieces of art. His work is very different. It is fun and unusual. Pictures of his work just don't do it justice. You should really visit the gallery in person. The lady working at the gallery was pleasant to talk with and very helpful. She knew all the stories behind each Termesphere. There are items you can purchase (I did), but even if you don't, just visiting the gallery is worth the drive. The gallery is located a little ways out of Spearfish in a rural setting, but they have signs along the way to help you find it.

Tucked away from the busy tourist season, this quaint little dome gallery and home is a must on your list of things to do! Renowned artist, Dick Termes, displays and sells his brilliance :) You really must see to appreciate. Even the kids enjoyed it! You could literally spend hours looking and keep finding new things. Fascinating,....yep still my word of choice.

I absolutely love to go here but the spheres are so expensive. I think I'll just watch there beauty instead

If you like to visit interesting places, you need to visit this place. As for the spheres, it didn't take long before I'd seen enough. The concept is interesting, and I enjoyed looking at them. You definitely need someone there to explain how some of these are created and what you need to look for. if the artist's wife had not been explaining different spheres for us, I would have left a lot sooner. Some of the artwork did not seem that great, but other spheres had very good drawings on them. (I am probably not the best judge of his drawing skills.) The real reason to visit is to see how he creates his different concepts.

The Black Hills of South Dakota... not just about motorcycles and Mt. Rushmore. Tucked away in a small canyon-like drive in Spearfish, SD lives one of South Dakota's own world renowned artists: Dick Termes. His gallery is in a dome as is his home... so right from the start the environment is enticing. How many of us have actually gotten to explore in a dome? The big bang, so to speak, is walking through the door into this gallery and immersing yourself in a world of spheres, at least 50 suspended from the ceiling, seated on rotating table stands or polyhedrons sitting on the floor ranging in size from 6" to 30" WOW! The artwork on the spheres is phenomenal but the concept BEHIND the artwork is what is truly intriguing. His 'sketchbook' is comprised of small ornament size spheres, where ideas are worked out... and can be purchased! Throughout the space are published articles about his work, his workshops, his philosophy, his WHIMSY. He has books that feature his art, videos show his artwork with comments by himself, and pieces that can be cut out and assembled into all kinds of polyhedrons. The atmosphere at the gallery is so relaxed and friendly, and one never knows when Dick might just happen to be in the gallery, having emerged from his studio (another dome located on the property). He takes the time to visit and explain his work. Also on board is a BONUS: His wife Markie has a puppet theater named DRAGONS ARE TOO SELDOM, which she travels the countryside producing puppet shows for children of all ages. some of her work can be seen and purchased at the gallery also. The Termesphere Gallery is a remarkable example of Best Kept Secrets hidden away... you will not regret taking a few moments to wander into Dick Termes' world... you may even want to take part of it home with you!

I could have stayed there a lot longer, viewing the spheres. They are not something you just glance at and move on. My family and I REALLY enjoyed this stop. Call ahead to make sure the gallery is open.

We probably should have called ahead, but didn't know enough to do so. I would recommend giving the artist a head's up as his gallery is next to his home and he was manning the gallery solo.If you have artistic kids you should plan to stop in. He is very patient as he explains his 6 pt perspective view on the world displayed on rotating globes hanging from the gallery ceiling. His work is unique and requires attention to detail to fully appreciate. His art is priced as it should be which is out of my price range, but he has really cool t-shirts which ARE in my range! His newest works are solar powered and just blew my husband's mind! It's not far off the main road, so take a few minutes away from the incredible scenery & spend them watching the hermespheres go round & round.

This place was amazing. We walked in and there were hundreds of painted spheres hanging everywhere. It was a visual overload. The talent was amazing. We got to talk to the artist and his wife ( a world known puppeteer) they told us stories of the spheres and many other things. Am returning to the area this spring and will definitely return!

AF_Hiker

This was a very small room filled with the artist's sphere art. He paints different scenes on spheres of various sizes, from Christmas ornament size to basketball size. Not sure if this is really a museum, as all items had price tags on them up to $250.
