The church is billed as the oldest one in North Carolina. It is also a functioning Episcopal Church.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church is quite plain inside but is in very good condition and almost 300 years old. As the oldest church building in NC, it is still in use and welcomes visitors to come inside. There is a balcony at the rear of the church. It was very interesting to look around. Outside is a small cemetery area. We walked around and read some of the gravestones. Enjoyed seeing this church.

Being able to enjoy the oldest church in the state is truly a special thing-- even if the building itself isn't much to thrill over. Regardless, it should be one of your most important stops on Bath's self-guided walking tour. It's lovingly maintained and still much in use today. Take some time to wander through the small garden and cemetery abutting the property, as it is of historical and cultural interest as well.

I will return at a later time to tour the Church. I was not able to go in as I had Buster (my dog and love of my life) with me. Bath is a beautiful place and I would love to return.

You will see this church while walking around the small town of Bath. They allow visitors inside, and we stopped in for a peak around. Nice grounds surrounding this old church. Plaques around the town explain when things were built along with a brief history. The town of Bath is definitely worth a stop if you are a history buff and enjoy small towns.

The St. Thomas Episcopal Church is the oldest surviving church in NC (built in 1734) and it's still an active parish after almost 300 years. The doors are always open for visitors. One exterior wall has names carved or written on it. I will never understand why some people feel the need to damage historic properties like this.
