I kind of knew what this place was going to offer before I went and was pleasantly surprised on the variety of goods that were offered. I like to try new things and have recently become a big fan of Mexican food. The food stuffs offered here were great. Yes they are mostly Hispanic vendors offering mostly Hispanic food items, but that's what makes it kind of neat. I'm dying to try the cactus and some of the dry beans for chile. Don't expect the type of flea market that deals with garage sale items and you'll have plenty of fun.
I had a job past this flea market that is how i found it. Wished I had looked on here first, that never even occurred to me.Yes it is very Hispanic (customers and vendors) and very busy, that isn't a problem. However if you are looking for a diamond in the rough, antiques, garage sales, or thrift store type stuff then this is NOT the place at least not in December. Maybe during the summer they get more people that pay for a space for the day (there are a lot of tables that you would set up that morning and take it home at night) and only maybe 1/4 of them were taken when we were there today. EVERYTHING inside a building was new (think shampoo, perfume, Jesus pictures, ball caps, clothes) and we were the minority by a wide margin. No one was rude or anything and the food smelled GREAT (we just ate Five Guys) though we didn't eat any, but plenty of others were. We didn't talk to one vendor but I could hear some speaking English. We went 1 building and 1 covered paved area and a few rows of tables through on the gravel aisles and I finally told my hubby this was wasting our time. Just know this is not your typical flea market and it was reminiscent of Cozumel.
99% of the venders are Spanish speaking, they did however speak English also. I found some great deals. the prices were reasonable. some is inside some are outside. I drove almost 3 hours and plan to go back. it was not uncomfortable being 1 of maybe 15 white people. it is crowded getting in but they had someone directing the traffic. I loved the outside venders that were surrounded with trees, it mad shopping easier in the shade. they do however pack up early around 2-3. so get there early.
The place is packed beyond belief and only open weekends. The front part (off the main road) is like the flea markets in Acapulco - loaded with clothing and junk. HOWEVER, if you want REALLY outstanding produce, this is the place. You can get the wonderful veggies that only Hispanic markets carry and the prices are right. Venture deeper into the markets that are in buildings behind the stalls and there are terrific places for pastries and other goodies. All in all, this doesn't rate highly with me as it's way too crowded, parking is a mess and just getting around the roads is a chore.
The main folks who visit here speak Spanish fluently! If the INS were to visit I suspect the place would empty quickly. Prices are okay for most of the goods that are available in the many, many flea market shops but nothing to write home about. Lots of clothing, cell phone and used tools. I had hoped for better prices. Loved the food stands. It has an area where you can buy animals (chickens, ducks, goats, etc.)
For a first time visitor please be prepared to walk a lot and look for the unexpected. I found the buildings to be very retail and much like a lot of full time flea markets. The outside vendors is where you the treasures. But you have to look and bargin.
If you are feeling the need to visit a very bad part of Mexico you should come here. Horrible place!! I wouldn't send my worst enemy there!!! Stay away!
This flea market has seen many changes over the years. The vendors are largely Hispanic, and cater to their tastes. However, there is such a variety, that there will be something for everyone.
Unless you are fluent in Spanish, don't waste your time. The outside of the Flea Market (closest to the road) is loaded up with cheap clothing, electronics, CD/DVD - usual junk. Deeper inside the market you will find an array of fresh veggies and fruits that is amazing. Inside the buildings there are bakers and other kinds of goodies. If you like crowds and bargaining, this is the place. Not my style.
Sorry, but I first went here 13 years ago and it was great. You could find antiques, locally grown produce etc. It is now and for the last 5 years or more been converted towards the Mexican population here and caters to that ethnic group. Produce is from somewhere but not locally grown, speak Spanish or they don't understand (or want to). Visit flea markets in SC or up in the Concord area.
Okay, the other reviewer is correct - this flea market is a waste if you are going there to purchase items such as antiques, furniture, etc. However, there is plenty of fresh veggies at a good bargain. The BEST reason to go here is simple - to eat! Go here for lunch if you like Mexican food. It's fresh, it's authentic, it's cheap and you cannot get a better overall deal.Sounds crazy I know, but I haven't found this level of authentic Mexican food since living on the border. It's the real deal. There are quite a few different little food stands to hit, so you could walk around just grabbing what you wanted here and there. If you are in the area, or just passing through, and have a hunkerin' for real Mexican food, then pull out a $5 bill and get over to this place, you will not be disappointed!
Plain and simple...DONT waste your time! What a crap hole. Best flea makret around is in Salisbury at Webb Road.
