The museum is very interactive except it needed to be updated. The (only) tv was from like 1995. Also the "temporary" exhibit was there both times I was there which is about a six month difference.

We toured the museum on 1-2-15 and thouroughly enjoyed it. Very inexpensive ( 6 bucks for adults) and one of the cleanest and organized museums I have visited. The lady at the front desk knows her history and is happy to answer your questions. 4 floors of exhibits with an elevator to move you between floors. There are some interactive exhibits and a hands on area for the younger kids. If you are interested in the history of the area and not just Andy Griffith and Mayberry, you will definitely enjoy this stroll through history.

This is a great place to go to learn about the history of Mount Airy, and Surry County. I highly suggest students to go to this venue. It is educational. History right before your eyes is hard to beat.

I love history and genealogy. This museum is beautiful both inside and outside, and it has so many interesting artifacts!! The staff are always so nice and helpful!!! I love going to the gift shop to see what new maps and historical books they have. I have attended the genealogy classes that usually are held in February and March at the museum. Esther Johnson, who teaches these classes, is so knowledgeable and friendly!! Cannot wait to visit this museum again!!!

We have always passed this place by but I don't know why!!! FANTASTIC place to visit. Friendly, helpful folks greeting you. The self-guided tour of the museum is totally worth it. And don't miss the BELL TOWER LOOKOUT!!! On a clear day you truly can see forever.

This museum was the best thing in the town--it covered everything form 17th century to the present. 4 floors of very interesting information --tributes to Donna Fargo, Andy Griffith and conjoined twins that lived in the area at one time. Also a great exibit about the granet quarry in town. I couldn't have been more impressed with the displays. The fee to get in was very reasonable as well--$6.

We had planned to visit Mount Airy on a raining Afternoon in August. We put on our rain ponchos and ventured out on the city streets. We found this gem. We paid the $6 admission and thought hmmm.....I hope it is worth at least it gets us out of the rain. We were pleasantly surprised. Lots of early history. We came away with lots of family history information. The gift shop had good books including a cheap poster that showed the location of the land grants in Surry County. The volunteer and the curator were most helpful. Great stop!

We were not planning to stop here, but glad we did. Lots of memorabilia from the 1700 and 1800 . Loved the fire trucks in the basement. You get a great view of Main St on the third floor. I would recommend this museum if you like to learn more about the history of NC. :-) Great job to the museum curator!

This was an unexpected visit. The museum was well laid out, the exhibits, while simple, were explained in great detail and gave a good sense of the history and geography of the place.

Large museum with several floors but they do have an elevator. We spent about an hour and a half going through it, lots of interesting things to see and read about. We found the Andy Griffith and Donna Fargo exhibits really interesting. If in the area you definitely need to stop by.

I found this museum as I was taking a Darker Side of Mayberry Walking Tour that started here. The museum is big with four levels so make sure you give yourself enough time to explore it. An elevator takes you to each level so it is wheelchair accessible. There are hands on sections for children that seemed to be enjoyed while I was there. I visited after my tour and managed to see the museum quickly in about an hour before it closed. There is a small but nice gift shop as well. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Photographs can be taken without flash so that was nice. The basement has several older firetrucks and a fireman's pole to go down if you choose. The first floor has an Indian exhibit and a train exhibit. One of the floors has a collection of older furniture and the different celebrities from Mt Airy. It was nice to learn about the history of the area including granite in the area. This museum was more in depth than the Andy Griffith Museum so I highly recommend a visit. It is self guided so you can go at your own pace. My only suggestion would be for the museum to get a friendlier clerk. It seemed as if she didn't want to see the museum and was not aware of the Darker Side of Mayberry Tour even though I was on the list. There are bathrooms for paid visitors to the museum.

This is worth the stop and the money- 4 floors and a nice kids area, with dress up and places to play. I highly recommend it.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed visiting this museum over Memorial Day Weekend. It was fun to learn more about the local history through the exhibits. It would've been nice to see a little bit about Andy Griffith at this location, although there's a separate museum dedicated to him. After dinner, we enjoyed the historic ghost tour (walking tour of the downtown area), which started and ended at the museum. It was a nice way to walk around town with good storytellers and learn a little more about the area.

A group of older ladies traveling to Mt. Airy to spend the day. We happened to park in a space right at the museum. We had been on the road a good while and needed to eat lunch before taking in the sites. We thought the museum looked just what we would enjoy. We walked in to check it out to A group of older ladies traveling to spend the day in Mt. Airy. We so happened in a parking space by the museum. Since we had traveled a good while we wanted lunch before seeing the town. we decided to check out to the museum so we could plan our after lunch adventure. Three of us ladies take blood pressure medicine and for those of you that also take blood pressure medicine you know what that means. An emergency run to the restroom.as we walked in One lady just could not wait another second and ask for the restroom and walked on around the corner. I then asked some questions about the museum, told her we plan to go eat lunch and then all 6 of us would be back. I said I do really need to use the restroom do you mind? She said she was sorry but she was not allowed to let people use the restroom but if we promised to come back she guessed it would be okay this time. When I walked away the others overheard her telling another lady working, do not let anyone else use the restroom. I truly hope this woman never finds herself in a situation really being in need to use a restroom and not being able to. The others turned around and left and when I came out and heard that I truly was not welcome to use the restroom in an emergency situation, when I did plan to return, or even if I didn't I was truly shocked. We decided we would not return to the museum. I know tissue and soap cost money and it probably is a rule but emergencies do happen and I would wish a town that promotes and survives on tourism would be more welcoming. I really would have loved to visit the museum but honestly was embarrassed to return after feeling like a criminal
