While planning a bike trip from Fleetwood to Todd, we read all of the negative reviews about Todd General Store and decided to pack a lunch, rather than eat at the store. After our picnic lunch, we were curious about whether the store is at bad as everyone said. As we entered, we were greeted in a friendly manner by two staff members. While browsing, one staff member offered her assistance. We weren't impressed by the merchandise, but found the lunch menu to be appealing and the staff to be friendly. We wondered if the grumpy man mentioned in earlier reviews had finally sold the store. However, when we asked the clerk if she was a new owner, she said she had been there for 14 years. We will definitely try the store for lunch next time we do this ride. As for the ride, there isn't much parking in Fleetwood, but if you go on the bike road for a mile or so, there is a parking lot near Fleetwood Falls. There is ample parking in Todd if you start from that direction.
Really expensive stuff but great location. Great place if you are looking for ice cream, I guess.....
This store as so much potential. We walked in to a very weak welcome. We asked about the Friday night music and were told they no longer gave it. We started picking a few things out and were offered no help. The owner started trying to sell us the store. Appeared stressed and desperate. We asked about a restroom and were told to go to the park across the street. Only when we bought about $80 worth of goods, were we told of the restroom in the rear. Supposed to be antiques upstairs. Mostly high priced item you could buy from the Amish in PA for much cheaper. We were disappointed by the lack of southern hospitality and expected mountain experience.Hopefully a local rescues this place before it crashes. It belongs with Blue Grass music and country charm. Not a bitter Yankee owner.
Recently my daughter and I visited Todd, a small hill community a few miles from where she had lived eight years before. Since we only stopped in for a few minutes, I gave the store the benefit of the doubt by rating it "poor" instead of "terrible." In those few minutes, I was left with several impressions: a potentially charming store with an odd assortment of merchandise for sale; a proprietor who didn't smile or greet me; an atmosphere that felt more like a museum than a store. On the way out I asked if I could buy a fishing license and was told "no, not here." When I then asked if anybody in town sold them, I was told, "I don't know; I don't fish" in a tone that seemed to say "don't bother me." Oddly 150 yards away we stopped at another small store and outfitters where I bought a license for both of us and inquired about fishing guides. How strange that the general store owner was unaware that one of the three local proprietors in town not only sold licenses, but also arranged fishing expeditions! On our way out of town, my daughter commented on how great the general store used to be, and perhaps the owner was having a bad day. Based on reading some other reviews, I can only hope that the next owners rekindle the store's former charm.
We visited with our parents as we usually do when we visit them at their summer cabin in Boone North Carolina. This time no other customers were there and the proprietor or owner curtly asked "can I help you" in a tone that seemed that we were bothering him. I said "just treaure hunting" as I usually do when we check out an antique store. Let me point out immediately that this is no longer an antique store but seems to be a low level highly over priced thrift store with nothing in there that would be of any interest to a genuine antiquer. But it gets worse. After our perusal of the 2 story building with obviously serious floor problems that may trip some older more fragile guests, my Dad in law wanted to purchase a post card and asked "how is business". Well, I guess that was the last straw as the owner barked at us saying " we are retiring and closing because of people coming in here and wanting to use the bathroom or buying a post card"! He went on to blame the government, intelligence and even us and said "well it's YOUR state"! We are from Florida my Dad said and by that time I was at the door saying "Let's get out of here, this guy doesn't want us here". We left and howled with laughter at this ridiculously incorrect poor excuse of a salesman and human being. So there is little business there...why do you think that is? Pitiful place that at some time was a landmark of the area but with poor management and attitude has fallen to a mere glimmer of what it was. NEVER WILL GO BACK!
The Todd General Store website claims bluegrass music played on Friday nights beginning at 630 pm. I drove from Winston-Salem and arrived at 6:30 to find the store was closed, and a note on the door which says bluegrass was only a couple of times per month. The store has a for sale sign in the window, so I don't know what that portends for the future. The was a total waste of time, gas, and money. I rarely write poor reviews, but this was quite aggravating.
We've enjoyed the Friday night music here once in the past. It was crowded, but entertaining. On our most recent trip to the area, we stopped in and found some very reasonably priced antique treasures.
SOOOO Rude. No prices listed and owner hung up on me when I called to inquire about our bill. >$100 for 2 hotdogs and 4 sandwiches. Too bad the owners are running the store's reputation in to the ground as it will be hard to build back up once sold. Such a sweet spot in a sweet community -- too bad these folks run it! Oh - and they also hide the bathroom away in the back behind stuff for sale so you cannot find it. Simply slide everything to the side and use the facility if you need to!
Todd General Store is in a beautiful location with a wonderful small river running thru the area! It is a rural area of the North Carolina mountains with a lot of history! The people of Todd are really nice and friendly! The store is nice! The owners are rude and weird! There prices are high and food is really over priced! If the staff would be more welcoming and lower their prices, this would be a better place! The only reason I went this time, I was with friends who had never been to Todd General Store! Just go and see the nice area and don't let the staff mess up your visit!
As someone that was born in the area and grew up going to the Todd General Store, and went all the time for years!, I was sadly disappointed in how it is now being run. I was there shortly after the current owners took over and haven't been back even though I'm in Todd several times a year. I don't deal well with rude people that are trying to get my money. And no, this guy doesn't get a second chance from me. I predicted then that they would be out of business in 5 years. I may have missed that date but if you want a penny from me you'd better have a pleasant personality while trying to get it. I've traveled to lots of touristy places around the world and price gouging tourist isn't something new. But be realistic! And at least be nice when you're doing the gouging! I mean I only paid $5US for a hot dog at the base of the Eiffel Tower, And it was a footlong dog at that!! And the young French girl that sold it to me smiled! And said "merci". Even the French can be pleasant to their tourist customers! Is there a fee for this attraction? Only if you buy something. PS I was last there well before August 2013 but I still hear from locals and not so locals that nothing has changed for the better.
We did not order food, just visited for bluegrass on Friday night. I thought the owners were super nice. We came back the next day with my son and parents. They had some interesting antiques but I did think some of the antiques were a bit pricey. This is a cool store, a little slice of Americana.
This is the biggest rip-off we've experienced in a long time. It could be the coolest place because it's a cool old store and beautiful area. The proprietors, however, are ripping people off. My husband and I were there late last summer. We noticed that the prices for food were not posted. We soon found out why. We decided to split a sandwich - we weren't that hungry. We got one sandwich, one drink and some water and the bill was $16.00. Ridiculous. The man was weird - he told us that he made a killing off ice cream the day before - no wonder, he was ripping people off, I'm sure. And he seemed proud of it. These people told us the place was for sale. I hope someone buys it but I'm sure they have it priced too high, also. They need to get out of town - auction the place off. Please let someone take it over that will do this place justice.
I had looked at their webpage that listed supper and story time on Tuesday nights. My friend and I went on June 17th, no supper or story time! When we got there they were closing the store as we stood in front of the store. They didn't even bother to acknowledge that we were standing there. We found it very rude that they didn't speak and let us know they were closing. We found out at the bakery that they no longer have supper and story time. I suggest that they update their website.
My husband and I recently visited but we were very disappointed. There is a small dining area that you can purchase freshly made sandwiches but the prices were not listed on the menu board and based on the prices of the store's antiques we probably could not afford the sandwiches. There are several signs placed around the store requesting that you purchase something in order for the store to stay in business which was a real turn off. We almost felt like we were doing something wrong and left not too long after our arrival. We've been there twice, our first time and our last time!
Was disappointed with the general store. Sandwich shop closed. Overpriced on antiques, which only saw a few things worth buying. Male owner made a comment not sure how to take. Said "last time to see the store, that they were closing it down, no one wants to buy anything".
