I really enjoyed the time we spent in the West End Historic District of Winston-Salem. Lots of beautiful, historic homes on big lots, very close to downtown and easy to reach by car or on foot. Nearby Hanes Park was nice and there were lots of great restaurants and shops to check out.
An entire village just as it was back then. People in period dress. Shops and restaurants much like they must have been....
The West End Historic District contains some of the city's most beautiful old homes and historic sites. There are several excellent restaurants - Bernardin's, West End Cafe, Fourth Street Filling Station and several more. Burke Street has several lively bars, grilles and a pizza joint or two. Lots of young people, noise and music. BE AWARE - Despite police patrols, street crime is a problem in the area, especially late at night. Be careful !
The wide streets, sidewalks, architecture and old trees make West End a nice venue for a quiet, contemplative stroll. There is also a variety of very good restaurants; something for every taste. Proximity to downtown and the baseball stadium add convenience.
The appeal of the West End is a sense of stepping back into a quieter more leisurely time. Side walks with lovely big trees shading you. Homes from a different era within easy walking distance of the vibrant downtown area.
Fine old homes, tree-shaded streets, quiet, perfect area for after lunch/dinner exercise. Good restaurants nearby.
We enjoyed a pizza at burkes pizza, and sat outside on the patio, chatting with all of the fine folk..and really enjoying the neiborhood feel of historical west Winston Salem! come, sit and take up some local chatter!
Suggestive of older, slower times. Great for walkers and lots of good restaurants. Has a large formal gazebo and small park right in the middle. Also the larger Hanes park is on the district' edge
