Our park staff works diligently to maintain the roads, regardless of weather conditions. Glad you enjoyed your visit!
Limited access is available to some of the caves in park at this time. Please call park office for more information. Glad you enjoyed all of the other activities.
If you are a history buff or just looking for something relaxing to do with your family this is the place. You should take a picnic lunch and visit the park on a day that they have live reenactments throughout the park.
Beautiful to see year round. Playground for the kids. Picnic tables for lunch. The village is well maintained and takes you back in time.
My husband and I just returned from a two night stay at the Spring Mill Inn and were very pleased. We had spent many summer holidays with our children years ago camping at their lovely campground so now it's just the two of us we like to take advantage of the their great two for one specials during the winter at the inn.Our daughter gifted us a two night stay as a Christmas present and we were able to get the three room suite on the first floor. We loved the extra space and privacy. Down the hall was a huge lounge area with comfortable couches and chairs with games and puzzles and a seperate pool area. Coffee machine (free) as well as soft drink and snack machines were available for purchase.. The pool is an indoor/outdoor pool with ladder only access so I was not able to take advantage of it. The elevator was close and one floor up was the dining room just steps away, another lounge area with a fireplace and the check in desk. Luke was on the job and took great care of us. Sweet guy!The buffet is serving three meals a day and was above average for the most part. Delicious salad bar, fried chicken, presliced roast beef (hard to keep from drying out) and baked fish. Also, mashed potatoes or rice and gravy, corn and green beans with ham. Desserts consisted of white cake, cherry cobbler (delicious) and corn meal pie (with coconut) which was very good and very sweet. $12.49 + drinks. The serving ladies were very sweet and took good care of us. We sat by the fireplace in the beautiful old dining room. Oh, yes, they gave us a 10% senior discount.Breakfast buffet is $8.49 + drinks included fruits, cereals including hot oatmeal, toast and bagels, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, hash brown potatoes, crisp bacon and sausage patties. That's a pretty basic selection but everything was fresh and good.I think Spring Mill Inn might be the best of the Indiana state parks. Everything was very clean, the employees were friendly, The park itself is truly beautiful and we look forward in staying here again next winter. Nest month Turkey Run!
The park features numerous walking trails odd various intensity along with a number of caves. A historic village had been recreated with actual buildings from preceding generations. The park features an old growth forest with huge trees.
We went with extended family to the village the first weekend of December when they were having the country Christmas. For some reason I was expecting Christmas lights and the normal Christmas stuff, I was completely wrong! It was on "old time" Christmas. The village had decorations on the trees that would have been used back when the village was first made. There were many volunteers dressed to the times in the cabins doing various activities with kids. They had free snacks and warm apple cider in the "tavern."
I experienced Spring Mill State Park the weekend before Thanksgiving, and even though the nature center, campground, boat rides and caves were closed there was still a lot to do. I enjoyed the extensive hiking trails, especially the walk around the lakes. The Pioneer Village is also open for limited hours (2-4 on Saturday afternoon when I was there). The grist mill is not in operation but most of the buildings are open and rangers are available for questions and conversation (and welcomed the company!). There is much to see, especially if you enjoy the combination of history and nature. Be sure to also check out the Gus Grissom Memorial located at the entrance to the park. Free and interesting.
Your visit starts by just enjoying nature. You can be as active as you want, Hike, enjoy the village, ( Now Closed ) Take a cave boat ride. Donaldson Cave closed due to ( Bats )white nose synd. The nature center is very nice, also closed for the winter. Nice pool, indoor , outdoor. Enjoy a walk around the lake while you can. They are going to be dredging it due to the sediment. You can enjoy reading a book around the fireplace, or go down stairs and read. Quieter upstairs. Game room and pool entrance are down stairs. If you enjoy nature you will love this place. Memorial to Gus Grissom is at the main entrance. Check some of my pictures out.
We visited the State Park with our grandchildren (ages 5 & 7) and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Village is great. Hiking is short and relatively east. Made a mistake of going to the lodge for lunch. The buffet looked very good, but for lunch we wanted much less to eat. I ordered the beef manhattan special (intending to eat half); wife ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with chips; and grandchildren ordered from the child's menu - 1. macaroni & cheese with chips & applesauce and 2. chicken strips & fries. My beef manhattan was delivered to the table immediately-we were told the rest would be out very soon, so I went ahead and started eating. It was luke warm, but ok. Very little beef, lots of mashed potatoes. I finished my meal and the other 3 still were not served. Asked where is the food - it is almost ready. Finally their food came. Missing the applesauce & chips - had to request. The waitress did not charge us for the manhattan but our experience was poor. It appears they are set up for the buffet and not orders from the menu. A couple at a table next to us were also waiting for a very long time for their food ordered from the menu. It took us over an hour for a 30 minute lunch. They were not very busy. LOVE THE PARK - WILL NOT RETURN TO THE LODGE RESTAURANT.
This is a lovely place to stop and see some living history. It has a working Grist Mill and you can buy stone ground corn meal to make delicious corn bread and polenta. A must buy if you are a cook and you are there.
Spring Mill State Park has so much to offer for those looking for either a day trip or a weekend adventure. You can visit the working village, old cemetery, hike trails, go through the nature center. Take time to visit the Gus Grissom museum or take a boat ride in a cave. Spring Mill offers rooms at the lodge or you can camp at the campground. There is just so much to do so don't miss the good times in southern Indiana.
the village is great. wonderful place to visit but the parking is so far away. hard to walk so far with disabilities.
It doesn't get any better to take a walk through the pioneer village on a beautiful autumn day! We visited on a Wednesday afternoon and it was not very crowded. This village includes a woodworking shop, leather shop, both of which had men working with the tools the pioneers would have used. Many other buildings to go through and explore. The gristmill is used to grind cornmeal every hour and the cornmeal is sold in 2-lb bags. Bought the souvenir bag for $5.00 and made fried green tomatoes the next day. Very good!As we were walking through the village homes and shops, we heard music. The woodworker had visited the gristmill to play some tunes on his banjo. What a treat! There is a very nice trail up to Hamer cave where the power source for the gristmill begins. The caves were closed this time of year, but the stream was beautiful.In-state visitors pay $5.00/car to get into the park. Once in, a person could stay all day. The Gus Grissom Memorial is just inside the gate and alone is well worth the $5.
We have visited the park several times but we hadn't seen it at night. I had been told that the night-time tour was really great and it was. But be patient, the place was packed, far more that I had ever seen before. Waiting on the shuttle took too long and as it was before dark, we were told by a ranger that we could take a very steep and twisted path. If you aren't in good physical shape I wouldn't advise it but it was a nice 20 minute hike if you like that kind of thing which we do! After seeing the park with a flashlight and enjoying the music played at several different places, we stood in line for the shuttle back to the nature center, where we had parked. It took some time, but it was a very pleasant visit. We are very likely to return next year!
