My family and I took a Daytrip to see the sights of this part of our great state, and arranged for a tour of the legendary Chase County Courthouse. The older lady that took us through the building was very knowledgeable and made it so very interesting! She was funny and animated. The courtroom was beautiful and we took pics of us doing a mock trial-I know it sounds crazy, but it was fun to imagine being back in the day. The jail was easily the most impressive section, and I can see it still standing after the rest of the building is gone! The phenomenal walnut woodwork that made up the unbelievable spiral staircase was in great shape and made for some awesome pictures! We had a ball, and recommend this tour to anyone who even comes close to this vicinity! Thanks for the trip back into time! Kathy L.
Guided tours of the courthouse (still in active use today) are available. We took the tour which explained the history of the building and also showed us the (now unused) lock-up behind the courtroom. It was an hour well spent.
I arrived in Cottonwood Falls on Saturday around 2:30 in the afternoon. When checking in to my room, I said that I came to Cottonwood Falls to see the courthouse. I was directed to the Chase CO Chamber of Commerce. I headed there and was greeted by a nice young lady. A guided tour is four dollars. A real bargain. The courthouse is really neat. It has been remodeled, but kept in the late 1800's decor. Just like the outside, the inside is unbelievable. The jail on the second floor is a must see. There is a cistern above the jail on the third floor. When in the courtroom look up at the ceiling. Checkout the stairs. Take the stairs. Take a picture out the oval window. Find out why the courthouse is in Cottonwood Falls and not Strong City. Find out how long the courthouse has been in operation. Find out more about John Haskell. I had fun and discovered a lot of information about Chase County. I enjoyed looking at the old pictures. The young lady from the Chamber was very informative. This is a must see.
A loving restoration of an architechtual gem. It's a combination of a working courthouse and a treat for the eyes. You don't really need to spend more than an hour here to soak it in. But if oour travels take you anywhere near.... then spend that hour. You won't regret it. My hat's off to the people of Chase County for taking care of and restoring this gem.
If you're in the area, make sure you visit this beautiful old courthouse. It was lovingly renovated a few years ago, and it received top-notch treatment. The building features beautiful hardwood floors and the staircases are stunning. There are lots of interesting and historic photos of the area throughout the building. You can even visit the old jail (which is a bit creepy, I might add). You have to go through the second floor courtroom, enter the jury room at the back and continue on to reach the jail. Well worth the effort.
Like: Magestic, great for photo buffs, wonderful history.dislike: 0The Courthouse is a magnificent treasure from the past, lovingly kept restored. It is the only courthouse west of the Mississippi continually being used for the original purpose since it's building.
Beautiful walnut everywhere inside. Check out the view from the round window on the third floor..and if court isn't in session, be sure to walk thru the courtoom and look at the jail behind it.
The courthouse is truly beautiful on the inside and out. I love going to cottonwood falls just so I can see this gorgeous courthouse.
That such an exquisite building is in the middle of the Flint Hills makes it all the more beautiful.
The Chase County Courthouse, just a few miles from the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, is an architectural gem, a French style in the middle of the Flint Hills. Although I haven't toured the inside, a drive by is always a part of our trip along this scenic by-way. Cottonwood Falls sports some excellent restaurants and hotels, interesting shops, so the detour into the town is definitely worthwhile.
Too bad they don't build like this anymore. I am always wowed by how buildings like this were built 100 years ago.
If you want to see the old stone courthouse that has been preserved, take a detour off Highway 50 & view this Courthouse. It is so worth your time.
If you are into creepy feelings, visit the old jail and go into the cell. There has definitely been something bad going on their, my hair stood on end and I felt like I needed to throw up, so had to get out of their quick. Some people like that creepy stuff, so if you do go there.Otherwise, the architecture is fantastic. This building has been restored and is gorgeous.
This courthouse is beautiful inside and out. Be sure to visit the court room and behind the juror's room is the old jail. It is pretty scary. If you are a photographer, you will love this courthouse. You can go up to the top and take a photo looking out on the street.
Why would such a beautiful building be HERE? In a tiny town off the path? Maybe it wasn't off the path, years ago. The building was formerly a dance hall. Now, just a marvelous example of the Victorian style. See it at night, if you are staying nearby!
