lady liberty

I love trolling the blue highways of Kansas, and this little reminder of what America stands for caught me by surprise. Her isolation on a hill overlooking the Solomon River Valley, one of the prettiest landscapes in Kansas, adds power to her presence. It's a great rest stop--quiet with room to walk around--if that's what you need. If you want a trigger for some deep meditations, she and the surrounding countryside will help with that as well. Glad she's back. Good for the folks who placed her and good for the folks who re-placed her.

Just a stop along Highway 281. There are nice views of the Soloman Valley and as long as traffic isn't high, you can have some good Kansas piece amd quiet.

Driving along the highway in this area there is mostly farm land but off to the side of the road is a great little picnic area with a mini statue of liberty. This is our second time seeing her. She is one of the prettiest of the mini's that we have seen so far.

A year ago we posted that Lady Liberty, on account of vandalism, was in the shop for repairs. This year, she's back! A job well done. Wonderful landmark on Hwy 281.

Driving 281 last summer, we were shocked to look west at the site of the Statue of Liberty and see that Lady Liberty was gone! Who would steal the Statue of Liberty?--or rather, the replica placed here by boy scouts in the 1950s, part of a national campaign to "Strengthen the Arm of Liberty" during an era of conflict with international communism. It turns out that Lady Liberty had been vandalized and was under restoration at a local body shop, in Smith Center. We visited her there. We are told now that she will soon be back in place; local caretakers are doing some work to prepare the site before they put the statue back. There are, perhaps, hundreds of these Lady Liberty replicas emplaced across the country, but this one is in the most rural setting of any I have encountered. I mean, it is at a country crossroads, rather than in a park or even a town. Thus Lady makes a striking display, out in the open. A great landmark on Highway 281!
