Wonderful zoo, great number of animals with wonderful enclosures. Their museum is a nice break from the heat. Be sure and ask about the history of the refuge, it is fascinating!
I don't typically write reviews, but folks need to know about this gem in Salina! I have used the RHZ Conference Center twice now to host folks from across the state for day long meetings. Gail and her staff are very attentive and accommodating. The facility is lovely and the food is always amazing. I can't say enough nice things! Thanks RHZ for making us look good!
Nice way to spend the afternoon. It's not Kansas City or Wichita but a nice little zoo for the Salina area.
Loved the location and the experience. Be ready to walk. Lots to see and very interesting. Lots of sun but the indoor museum is good also
Biggest collection of dead animals in Kansas. Yes, they have a building stuffed to the rafters with taxidermy. This is not what I expect for a Zoo !
I just love this place. You can take a leisurely stroll around or ride the tram. There is a petting zoo for the kids, I walk through every time I go, which has been on several occasions. Whenever I get to Salina I try to stop by and visit this place. Although I really don't care too much for zoo's, this one is into conservation. There is also a great museum on the same grounds, well worth a visit too.
This zoo is beautifully laid out, great exhibits and animals. Great staff. One of the best - take the time to visit! (Our daughter also did an internship here and the staff truly cares about the animals, takes time to talk to visitors, etc)Pros: * Small and up close visits * Price is good * Beautiful location and grounds - hilly so be prepared! * Zoo tram available * Great exhibits and museum Cons: * Hilly and can be quite windy/chilly but just be prepared
My 2 year old is always fascinated with the animals at Rolling Hills. What a wonderful way to spend the day! The animals are always healthy and active. The best time to go for us is early in the morning, this is when the animals are most active and interactive. The gorilla exhibit is our favorite part. If you have a chance to ride the tram, I highly recommend it! Don't forget to bring quarters to feed the animals in the children's zoo and the fish in the pond. They don't call it Rolling Hills for nothin! There are a few hills to get up and down so take that into consideration. Also attached to the zoo and included in your ticket entry is the museum. It's a great way to cool off from walking the zoo and see some awesome exhibits and walk around the world.
My expectations were high as I have visited bigger much better zoos (San Diego & Los Angeles). One aspect I did like was the tram that goes through the park. We felt the amount of animals were minimal. There is vast room for improvement and expansion. It did not take long for us to go through the park.
I was on a tour with a group of about 50 people and we were expected. Once in we were directed to the trams, except the seats were so dirty no one would set on them. That seemed to be a problem because our driver was gone for quit a while and returned with ONE paper towel. It was a very pleasant morning, so much so almost all the animals were either hiding or some place out of sight. Did not bother our driver, she just talked along like they were there. The museum inside is GREAT, the best I've ever seen. The museum is worth the trip. Lunch wasn't much. A hamburger and chips. The only condiment was some ketchup packs. No onions, pickles, just a dry hamburger. Someone finally found some mustard, but it was so old you couldn't get it out of the pack. Discounting these drawbacks this is really a nice, clean well kept zoo and museum that needs to pay a little more attention to the details.
I've visited this zoo many times, and each time it gets better! Be sure to go early before it gets too hot to have the best chance to see active animals. Make sure to stop by the museum that's included in your zoo admission, you won't be disappointed!
We were very impressed with the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure. All of the exhibits are modern and expertly done. The kids had a great time and the cost is very reasonable. We will visit again!
Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure is probably one of the most frustrating attractions I've visited. On the one hand, the park is so much more peaceful, clean and uncrowded compared to other zoos I've been to.But on the other hand I've seldom felt more bored at a zoo--granted much of this is out of the zoo's immediate control. The first pleasant surprise was seeing that you could rent a stroller when you got your tickets. Excellent! They even have scooters for the handicapped. The signs are pretty intuitive and before long you'll arrive at a lake with some of the brightest fish I've seen--colorwise, that is. When you throw them fish food they writhe over each other with more reckless abandon than shoppers at Walmart on Black Friday. The fish food dispenser was in need of repair--unless 25 cents is really supposed to give you only about 10 pieces of fish food. You could shake it a few times to get closer to your money's worth.Around the park at appropriate intervals are misting tubes to cool you down. I can tell you that Sunday around 2pm in July is grueling. So then you get to the first few animals, depending on which route you take. The lack of crowds means you can get a great view . . . of animals that are busy sleeping. I'm not an animal activist by any means, but even I felt a little pity for the SNOW leopard panting in the shade from the heat and humidity. Also in regards to viewing . . . you are either really close, ridiculously far away, or viewing is not even possible. For example, the geese and flamingos you can get within touching distance. But if the animals deem it to be too hot and run inside, some of the indoor areas are completely inaccessible to visitors--can't even look in a window in some cases. Have fun looking at empty stalls. It unfortunately reminded me of that line in Jurassic Park, "You, um, do have dinosaurs on your tour? Right?"I think a few GoPro cameras and TV screens would be an excellent way of letting visitors see the animals when they're hiding inside or in a corner somewhere. There is a nice--if sometimes questionable--variety of animals. I believe this attraction with its lack of crowds and quaint, inviting atmosphere could be something really spectacular. But when most of the animals are either inactive or unviewable there is definitely something to be desired.
Animals has large enclosures with good and appropriate landscaping. Large, shaded viewing areas with seating along the way. Good sized restrooms are air-conditioned. Ample easy parking with large, shaded picnic area. The best part for me was the pet sitting they offer! $5.00 to keep your pet in an air conditioned kennel while you go play!
Recently my daughter and I visited the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure a few miles outside of Salina, Kansas. First, we were impressed with the lovely landscaping and layout of the grounds. As we visited the various areas, we saw well-cared for exotic animals in large, natural, habitats. Well-placed displays gave interesting information about the animals which made this visit quite educational as well as enjoyable.
