Quiet, simple, reverent - much like the founder himself. Father Damien established several parishes on the upper island even as he devoted most of his efforts to the leper settlement at Kalawao. Beautiful and well worth the stop.
Lovely little church, we stopped and enjoyed a walk around the cemetery grounds.Took a few pictures. We spent less than a hour.
Visited this church as part of a one-day tour of Moloka'i. We were dissappointed to find out that we could not visit the actual leper colony (since a few people still live there -- we did not know that), but seeing the rest of this island, especially this church helped us learn that Fr. Damien did much more on Moloka'i in addition to serving the lepers. The statue of Fr. Damien was worth seeing and the church represents part of his legacy, which is so obviously respected and adored on the island, as evidenced by the care given to this (and other) churches on the island.
Cute little church that gives details on Father Damian and his exploits. Leave a donation open to the public and not locked. Makes a nice stop on your island drive.
The church is only small but is beautiful and welcoming. They leave it unlocked so you can enjoy the interior and reading matter there. A statue of Father Damien is located beside the church. Leave a donation.
This church has recently been totally rebuilt do to a fire a few years ago. It is very beautiful inside.
A very attractive, very small Catholic Church located on the side of the road. You need to stop to see it and read about it.
There is an elegance in small simple churches. This is a prime example. When you travel east, it's worth a brief stop (the church is unlocked). It's a very simple Catholic church. There's room for several cars to park safely.
The church is open (they just keep the doors shut, so pull open the doors to see the quaint little church). There is a historical marker. The grave yard is still in use (sad to see a family there celebrating a special day for the young son they lost). And even a veteran's statue remembering a Union veteran from the War Between the States. It was a nice place to stretch your legs, learn history, and experience real life.
This is one of the churches that Father St. Damien built on topside Molokai. It is located on a quiet location after Mile Marker #10 or so, around 11 miles east of Kaunakakai. It is well-kept and has a statue of St. Damien draped with a few leis. You may visit the inside of the church as well as the doors are not locked. Photos of St Damien and the Kalaupapa area are displayed in the church. Worth a stop by especially if you had the chance to visit Kalaupapa.
This is a tiny church built by Father Damien. It is one of the oldest structures on Molokai! We went by on a Saturday and were excited to see that it was open. There is not a whole lot to see, but it is definitely worth a stop. A little further down the road is Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, another Damien church.
The church is well maintained. We didn't see the inside but it was cool to stop and take some pictures of the outside.
The church is well maintained and in great shape. Father Damien's influence is felt all over the island so this is a must stop for tourists.
This is a great site. It was overcast the day we went, but I imagine in the sunlight, with the church being white, it has such a holiness to it.
Driving on the road saw the church sign , church and graveyard . The church door was open to go inside. This is a small church well maintained by local people. The church was established by Father Damien in the late 1800's. Worth the time to see.
