stonefield historic site

We visited in September, 2014. Docent was very good, friendly and knowledgeable. Historical town with a farm house, mansion, general store, antique farm equipment. There were very few people there visiting which was a disappointment because it is a great place to visit! So much to see!

We had driven past Stonefield during the off season several yrs ago and finally got to return to check it out on the 4th of July--so glad we did! FIrst off, the park is right off the Great River Road, which is about as nice a drive as you'll find anywhere. We took all 3 tours, and found Marie to be a very pleasant, informative tour guide. We spent about 3 hrs at the park, and had it not been getting to lunch time, we might have stayed longer. After the general store tour, we stopped in the confectionary where there is an "on your honor" ice cream case--nice treat! Leave a little extra in the money bin while you're at it--this park is kept in pristine shape by a very small band of dedicated employees. After the park we drove through Dewey Nelson State Park across the road, where you can find amazing views over the Mississippi basin, then had a picnic along the river in Cassville--just a perfect day!

Original buildings that was moved into a setting to make it like a town from back in the 1800's. It was interesting to see how stores, saloons, jails, etc looked back then.

A step back into old Wisconsin History. The Nelson Dewey (WI first Gov.) house and attached state park are wonderful and quite peaceful. The Stonfield site is old world charm at its best with original village outbuildings preserved as they were. Educational and entertaining.

You can't get any more realistic with working people in costumes. The farm machinery museum show how simple the machinery was, and how hard the people worked to get a crop. The Nelson Dewey house has 18" thick walls for cool in summer, warmth in winter. Period furniture and table settings and very knowledgeable guides answer questions. The old barn and covered bridge complete the 1890s village, and special weekends add to the charm of the setting.

Stonefield is a replica of an early American village. It has a school house, a general store, a church, a millinery, barber shop, a typical home, a blacksmith shop and others to give you the feel of stepping back in time. Worthy of checking out if you happen to be visiting SW Wisconsin.

Stonefield is one of the nicest and well cared for historic sites around. Always friendly and helpful people working there and running the place. And the Safe & Spooky Halloween every year is a fantastic event for all ages. None like it around! :)

We visited the day after Labor Day so it was virtually empty except for the employees. This was great for us. We received private tours for the village butcher/store, farmhouse and Governor Dewey Mansion. A tour is the only way to get into the farmhouse and mansion. I think the butcher/store is generally open. There are listed times for the tours. There is a lot to see if you like life in the late 1800's. There is the Barn which has a lot of farm implements, then an outdoor area with historic implements and a museum(we didn't go into this), the village with all sorts of stores and school, and the Governor Nelson Dewey home. The stores were open for viewing. A few were: photography shop, millinery store, bar, funeral parlor and furntiure making, broom making, print shop, etc. The Dewey Mansion is a short walk across the street. There is also a covered barn that you walk through to get from the farm to the village. In the gift shop/entrance, there are restrooms, gifts, candy, drinks and water. There were also restrooms in one of the stores in the village.After leaving here we decided to take the Cassville Ferry across to the Iowa side instead of driving. I think it cost $15 for us and our car. It only took about 10 or 15 minutes and was worth it for us to experience it.

Went here to see governor Dewey 's home and his original farm. a village and agriculture museum were later built. it is surrounded by a stone fence that was built by hand. It is by the Mississippi river and one of the most beautiful hidden treasures nestled in the hills of sw Wisconsin. A treasure to share with your spouse and kids. homemade rootbeer, brooms, ice cream, & great gift shop. Pack a picnic and enjoy the nostalgia!!!
