Very knowledgeable people talking about the history of the area. They tell you about the towns and people who settled there.
Learn more about cheeses than ever knew and bought many varieties as the price per pound was MUCH cheaper than in grocery stores.
They learned how cheese is made! They were shown this strange little object that the cheese makers would wrap their feet around so they didn't fall in the vats!
They charge for "tours" which really consists of really only a video. Yes, they do have artifacts but I did not find it worth it. Sorry, but I don't get the attraction. Really nice old Railroad Depot houses it. There is a relocated creamery where they make cheese in the old way on special occasions. Very nice and you can look in. If you want to see how cheese is made you're better off going to Alp & Dell. There are a couple of events where they use the old creamery to make cheese.
My husband and I came here on Tuesday, June 10, as part of our vacation. When the idea formed about visiting Wisconsin again, my one requirement was that we tour a cheese factory! Well, my husband not only found a cheese factory BUT this attraction, too! The joke had been for days that I wanted to find "happy cows" because of recent tv commercials stating that "happy cows are from California" -- right out front of this center is a "happy cow" statue -- I was thrilled! Once inside, after we paid our admission fee of $5 each, we watched a brief video about the cheese making process and yes -- "happy cows DO come from Wisconsin NOT California!" After the video and a switch of guides, we headed upstairs to a large room filled with artifacts and history. Interesting enough but the guide wasn't real forthcoming with information - it was just easier to read signage as we went. She did, however, take us out to the "factory" which was a one-room building with artifacts in it as well. We took several photos and picked up a couple souvenirs for reminders of our visit! As for history - it was great that we came here first before the actual cheese factory tour at the Alp & Dell. For anyone who has no idea of the cheese making process, this is a must see!
We were so lucky to have Jim Glessner as our tour guide. What a fountain of information and such a love for the cheese history of Green County it was contagious. If you love industry on parade, this is going to be a treasure for you. We hope to be back one June for the Imobersteg event of a lifetime! Looking for Morbier's more subtle cousin, Limberger. As cheesehead wannabes, we now appreciate the lives and toil of dairymen in the beautiful artform.
The owner of the Cheesemaking Center is from Switzlerland and gave an awesome tour besides yodeled for us also. Very interesting cheesemaking plant. Had wonderful cheese and ice cream.
Got to see the history of the area, photos of back when, and the volunteer was very fun and made the experience interactive and wonderful. Then we went to see cheese actually being made!
Great place to learn about cheesemaking and dairying in Wisconsin, lots of early farm and cheesemaking equipment with knowledgeable guidesLoved our tour.
You walk in and greeted with friendly staff. The tour is rushed - I guess because another group came in behind us. They play a recorded tour and out the door you go. No chance to linger and look at the items.
Fantastic, full of interesting cheese history, cheese tools, old artifacts. A very friendly staff greet you as you enter and are helpful in every way. There is an old caboose on the grounds that you can walk through as well as an old cheese factory transported from northern Illinois. What a marvelous treasure in Monroe. All cheese lovers should go for a visit.
Great Volunteers who are very proud of their heritage and County pride.Worth the stop in Monroe
Not knowing a thing about the process of making cheese, other than cheese comes from cows, I stopped in at the Cheesemaking Center and was glad I did. The building also serves as a small tourist information place and a very small gift shop. The cheesemaking museum ($5) is a combination of historical photos, data, and machinery and other various devices used to make cheese. More updated cheesemaking processes are explained in an excellent 10 minute video, and the history of cheesemaking is presented by a pre-recorded voice as you walk through the museum with a docent and look at all of the memorabilia. The docents during my visit were an absolute delight. I could have spoken with them all day long. Both of them came from cheese making families, or were part of a family still making cheese in the area. Both ladies were engaging, interesting, and incredibly knowledgeable about the cheesemaking process.
