Love visiting this place and the wine tasting is wonderful. The owner is knowledgeable and personable. Great variety of wines and wine related items to purchase.
I am not a wine expert of any kind so any critique of taste is simply my opinion. When we arrived the owner (?) informed us we would be the last wine tasting of the day. They locked the door behind us to prevent others from coming in. I guess it was nice they let us stay but felt a little guilty as though we were putting them out.The wine tasting experience was fine, they didn't share too much info or make us wait too long in-between. However, the main guy sat down with us on the second wine to share a story with us. We all thought it was in regards to the wine, but he proceeded to regal us with a long-winded review of his professional background and how he had part in saving some woman's life with a cancer drug and how many millions of dollars were involved. Huh? Turn off for sure and didn't go well with the constant reminder of how they don't like to accept credit cards to the fee charged by the company. The wine to me was simply ok, not one that really appealed to me. Too sweet, too watery (I'm sure that's not a description for wine but they seemed so insubstantial to me). The heavy reds were non-existent, but again maybe that's my preference. So, overall an entirely so-so experience I won't repeat and won't be buying wine from.
The title says it all. If you expect big bold wines you will be disappointed. I am not a sweet wine fan so this not the place for me. The exceptions I found were the Bluegill and Rockies whites which were decent. People seem to love the white Sangria, I thought it was pineapple juice...
We tried the wine tasting although we are not really wine drinkers. As we expected, we didn't care for most of the wines, but we sure did have fun and loved that pineapple wine. I like sweet wines, like Moscato (the kool-aid of the wine world, which most "real" wine drinkers can't stand, so take our dislike of the "real" wines with a grain of salt). It was a hot day and they had a wine slushie made from their pineapple wine that was downright dangerous because it was so yummy. We kept our commemorative wine glasses to remember our fun day by.
I am allergic to red wines so I was a little hesitant about the wine tasting. But for $6 my friends got to taste 14 different wines and keep the glass. For non wine drinkers there was hot brandy apple cider which was delicious! The cider also came with a souvenir mug so I was super happy! The staff was upbeat, friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and the wines themselves were very good. I liked the vacationer and the rock bass varieties best. I would definitely go back. This was a great place to get out of the bad weather and enjoy some good drinks and great company.
This is our 6th or 7th year of coming to HookStone Winery and I like that their wines are consistently good year to year. Given the challenges of producing consistent quality with climate affecting the harvest differently every year speaks well of the winemaker. Being a small winery, it would be easy to just make fruit wines like so many other Wis wineries but they don't, they make wines like chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir and a really good syrah. My two favorites are the Sunfish Syrah and the Bluegill Blanc which is a Sauvignon Blanc. They also have a great red sangria that's perfect on a hot day.I think their presentation is getting better with time. I've always liked their tasting room/gift shop but their tasting presentation is definitely hitting the mark. It's well put together in a nice order and you get to try all their wines. A lot of smaller wineries just let you try 4 or 5 and that's it but HookStone does it right and you get to keep the glass for the 5 bucks.A very nice winery and very good wine keeps us coming back every year when we're in town. I definitely recommend it.
Had a second look at the HookStone Winery - Northern Pike Red Wineblend. Well balanced flavor and tannins. A fun Pinot style red than I had previouslyremembered it. Great on it's own or with a heart meal. What a memorable way to relax with friends after skiing the Birkie! Worth the value - great gift shop. Less crowdedthan previous summer visits.
When we first visited, this small winery's offerings were nothing special. With each visit, however, it keeps getting better! Anna, the server, is very gracious. All varieties have improved. The addition of a port sealed the deal ...
I've purchased wine at Hookstone winery several times, but a friend and I decided to do the wine tasting at this visit. We sampled 15 different wines and was provided with a description of each wine. Crackers were provided to cleanse our palate between wines. The tasing was 5 dollars and the wine glass was part of the tasting. Atmosphere is very nice. They have a nice selection of wine that is moderately priced.
My brother, sister-in-law, husband and I did the wine tasting in August. Great wine (we bought a box full) and fun time. Recommend for sure!
A new wine with a hint of Cranberries...very good. Bought several bottles for the upcoming holiday season.
We often go to Winery's all of the place especially when we are camping. We have even planned trips around Winery's. So I was pleasantly surprised while planning a couple camping trip to find this Winery. The winery was easy to find and the staff was not only pleasant but very helpful. We enjoyed our wine tasting and each bought several bottles of wine to take with us. We also enjoyed the different flavored oils they had as well. Wonderful place and we had a great time
The unique atmosphere of Hook Stone Winery is what drew us in, but it was the perfect service and great flavor of the wine that kept us there for over an hour sampling and enjoying the afternoon. Our two children were welcomed with a basket of crackers...okay maybe this was for we the wine lovers, but our children were treated well...not like other wineries where they snub kids.
Staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about their wines. Had a great time talking to the girls working their - and their sangria is awesome!
Close to downtown shops for ease in walking to; nice atmophere & layout inside, was busy and knowledgeable staff spread kinda thin but they apologized for that. Would go again. Good sales on store items also.
