Well, the Stewartstown Railroad has been a repeatedly on again, off again operation. Their buildings are the blight of Stewartstown as you approach from 851. I've been a resident of Stewartstown for over a decade, and each day I commute to work I must travel over the pothole ridden tracks and look at the dilapidated buildings owned by this club. They have repeatedly tried to continue operations, but are only running a maintenance car on weekends for customers to see the short piece of operational track. Clearly the operation costs more than they are receiving in tourism fees. Go to Strasburg, PA or the B&O Railroad museum in Baltimore!
Stewartstown Railroad is a short line railroad in south central Pennsylvania which is housed in an old railroad station. There are displays in the station and some railroad equipment on display outside the station. In 2014, they will be offering motorcar rides on select Sundays. We visited on National Train Day and took a motorcar ride. Also known as speeder cars, they were often used on railroads for doing work on the line. There were a number of children on the trip with us and they were all having a great time. This is not a full size train ride but it is very fun. The train goes quite slow and covers a few miles. The trip lasted about 45 min. The volunteers were extremely friendly and made us feel welcome. Highly recommend a stop at this up and coming attraction. Looking at the equipment outside and visiting the museum is free. The motorcar trips cost $6.
