never went swimming at the beautiful pool, never played mini golf either, but we go often throughout the summer. love it. we ride our bikes around the path. it's terrific every time. we have a boat weekend here and use the bathrooms and dock services. the price is fair and it's always a great time. the view of nine mile tower and beyond to downtown is terrific. i have to keep in mind the person who may have never been here, it's nice. lots of trees and grass. nice sand beech. bbq's. we ride our bikes and it's not uncommon to see deer. for sixteen miles out of downtown Detroit, it's an exceptional park.
Metroparks have been a standard for my family for decades. Family reunions, picnics in the summer, looking at the colors in the fall, looking for animal tracks in the winter snow and checking out all the wild flowers and critters in the spring. Metro Beach is right on the shores of Lake St. Clair. It has a nature center, boat launches, and a lot of amenities that cater to everyone. Just seen two Cooper's hawks, a red tailed hawk, and a couple of deer while I was passing thru earlier today. If you want to see wildlife, it's as close as your local Metropark.
The light houses shown in the picture were built before the Civil War. You can see them from the beach, but they are a few miles out and you need a boat to get to them. There are actually two lights (for the nautical types, they are range lights). They are no longer in use, but a volunteer group has raised close to a million dollars and is working to restore them. The beach itself is a great place year round. There are different areas that lure different people and they have the best of facilities for everyone. The park area is actually a large peninsula. One side is composed of a marinas and seawalls where people can rent short-time space (3 hours to a week at a time). There are two large marinas that the boaters have segregated by selecting the one they prefer. One is more popular with the older boaters and tends to be rather quiet. The other is more commonly full of younger boaters and the picnics and parties are loud. One thing that is a disappointment is that even if you pay for more time, if you leave the well they will rent it to someone else. The other side of the peninsula is composed of beaches and picnic space that the non-boaters choose. They often have concerts with the music ranging from the Detroit Symphony to 50s Rock and Roll. There are food stands, but they are not the best. It is more common for people to bring their own. It is common to see wagons full of picnic food being dragged out into the park. There is a huge parking lot, but no cars are permitted in the park area. In winter, you see people sitting on buckets while ice fishing. Overall, it is great place to visit, but it really takes a while to learn all it has to offer. The fee to enter is not very high and buying an annual pass makes it even more reasonable.
Not very far away from metro Detroit is this large property. There is a lot going on here, but I come here regularly to walk with a friend. The walking trails are nice. There are always red winged blackbirds, and the parts by the shoreline are quite lovely. The water shifts from looking bright blue to looking steely grey. The trails behind the nature center can get muddy, but once you approach any of the boardwalk or paved areas, it's easy walking, flat with lots of pretty views.
Metro beach, now called Lake St. Clair Metro Park, is fun for the whole family. Once your in the park there is a free splash pad area that we all love, free shuffle board, a playground for toddlers, 3 hole golf course, putt putt golf, nature center, swimming pool, beach front, trails, really to much to do in one day. Lots of fun for the whole family. They have a concession stand or if you want to grill your own there are grills and picnic tables for you. If you plan on going too a Metro Park more than once or twice in a year then I recommend getting the sticker.
Many of you come to Michigan because of the Great Lakes, or because of sporting events. This is a review about biking in Metro Detroit. At the corner of Schoenherr Rd. and Metro Parkway (16 Mile as we in Detroit call it) is a 9+ mile paved bike path/road that runs 20 or more feet from the main parkway. It's mostly flat and smooth, good for families with little ones or senior citizens to ride, walk or skate on. There are park benches to rest on, and several food places along the way. At the end is beautiful Metro Beach Park. If you have been walking, skating or biking, entry is free. If you choose to come by motorized vehicle there is a fee. Once inside, there is a continuation of the bike trail for another 3 miles along a peninsula: a boardwalk, water park, sandpits for volleyball, kiddie park, tennis courts, grilling areas and pavilions (free), pool, marina, miniature golf, golf course, snack bar, gift shop (require fees). My family and I have ridden this wonderful course as a summer tradition and to relax. Check out all the Metro Parks. Biking paths are in all of them and many have off-road trails that are lots of fun!
Grass with poop. Beach with poop.Grass growing in cracks of parking lot. Now there is more geass poop than I care to see.
Metro beach is a wonderful place for a picnic or just to get and relax in the sun. The park is huge with plenty of space to move around of be secluded if you want some privacy. Pack a lunch and go relax for a few hour and watch the boats and enjoy the people. There are nice walking/biking paths throughout the park too. The park is very clean as well with nice bathroom facilities. Don't forget your camera for a beautiful picture of the sunset over Lake St Clair!
Great place to watch the boaters. Bike into the park.Pack a lunch and enjoy! We visit quite often and neverget tired of the views of the lake.
Metro Beach, this is a place where the atmosphere is beautiful. You have everything that you think that you might need to enjoy your family and friends gathering. I have never been to a Metro park like this park; here are some of the things that they have (beach, pool, splash area, shuffle board, shops, volley ball, nature center, Pier fishing, hikes & bikes, security and excellent customer service) etc. People had reserved areas next to each other all over this park and everyone seem to embrace the atmospheres among each other no one seem to feel like you were in their space, people just enjoyed themselves I enjoy seeing people happy and people where happy it was great. No matter where I walked around in Metro Park it was just amazing how the atmosphere felt, there were graduations, family reunions family and friends gathering, I mean there where so many things going on in Metro Park with family and friends, some had D.J's some had bands it was just amazing to me.. My family was there from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and family and friends where still coming, I want people to know this is an excellent place to visit with your family or friends if you're anywhere near this area or if you want to plan an outing. I was with family from 90 years to infants, once again there's something for everyone. Buses get in free everyone is charged a $5.00 fee to enter
It's too bad when you go to the beach and it's so dirty you can't even swim in the water. Apparently, there is periodic testing of the water to see if it is clean enough to swim in. So, one day it is unswimmable, filthy, bacteria-ridden water and the next day it is deemed clean enough to allow the kiddies in. Either way, the sand is becoming one with the endless piles of goose poo (& other types of bird poo). You take off your shoes to walk in the warm sand and step on these hard little brownish balls and you wish really hard that they're only balls of sand and stone but deep down you know it's goose turds and you promptly put shoes back on and walk over to the pool. But the pool is nice. And there's a splash park for the little ones which is fun and definitely worth the five bucks it costs to get into the park. There's a fun tot lot area and plenty of nice picnic areas. The bike trail is awesome and the scenery (other than the beach area) is beautiful. I'm not sure if I went too early in the season (mid-June) but the concessions were not open and only ONE out of the five or six vending machines were functioning. There was a drinking fountain though so that's almost the same as a concession stand. And, oh yeah, there is a nature center. Nothing of much note there, unless you like stuffed birds. There is also mini golf and regular golf (for a fee) but I did not utilize those options. Overall, this has the potential for a fun day at the pool, splash park, and tot lot as long as it doesn't get too crowded with kids on field trips. Just don't count on swimming at the beach.
This metropark used to be great but it has gone way down in the past few years. At least once a summer the beach is closed due to effluvium. Trash is strewn all over the place. I have not been there recently because it was so bad the last time we went.
Spent the day last summer. And a wonderful time and will visit again. The township of Harrison is great anyway. Thought about moving here before. Bring the family out and enjoy the beach. Lake St Clair has many sites and activities to enjoy.
Great Lakes are often polluted and not for swimming. Area has gone down hill and attracts rowdy crowds.
I love to spend time walking at Metro Beach. There is a lovely paved path for biking or walking along the water. In the warmer months it's nice for a picnic and a visit to the nature center or walk in the woods. In the winter, it's picturesque and serene, but bundle up as the wind can be very chilly. Fall is just beautiful !
