Great area. So many wonderful hiking and biking trails in the area. It was fall when we were there so I can't speak to the staff of the shop but the grounds were very well kept and the sweeping view was ablaze with fall colors. This a less visited area of The Great Lakes but should definitely be seen! I'ts a very nice drive if you get on U.S.23 in Alpena and take it all the way to the bridge (The Mackinac Bridge). If you have the chance stop at Grand Lake, make sure you do it! It's a beauty.
We enjoyed the history of this lighthouse and the wealth of knowledge from the shop keeper. She was so informative and a delight to talk to. The grounds are just speechless beautiful. So well kept. The lady inside the store gave such helpful hints on climbing the steep stairs to the top and coming back down. I was worried I would not get to experience this because of my vertigo. She was very helpful on it. What a great experience we had at this light house. You just should not miss this. A spectacular view from the very top of the lighthouse. Fee was almost nothing to climb. We will sure visit again. Hopefully not on such a windy day.
This is a beautiful area of northeast Michigan. If you go to Grand Lake Rd, about 10 miles north of Alpena, and take this to the end (another 10-12 miles), you will find this great lighthouse and museum. There is a pavilion and picnic tables to enjoy a lunch right on Lake Huron. The staff is friendly and helpful. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a terrific view of the area (there is a fee for this but everything else is free.). There are also very nice hiking trails along the lake. Another must see in the Alpena area!
excellent staff very knowledgeable and helpful views all around were nice it was easy to find and very resonable
Beautiful views and grounds. Old Lighthouse is a short distsance away and well worth visiting. The former lighthouse keeper's home is a fascinating view into life in a prior century.
Last year my husband and daughter and I stopped here the Old presque lighthouse as well. It was getting late so they were closing up but we could still walk around everyone was helpful and if you like lighthouses you must stop. the fee is only if you want to climb up
We went to both the 'old' lighthouse & the 'new' one. Climbed to the top of both and had wonderful view, though very windy at the top!! The staff in both were very friendly & informative, sharing stories on the how/why about the lighthouses!!! Lots of tshirts & sweatshirts available, reasonably priced between $15-30 they also have other lighthouse memorabilia!!!! Well worth the trip!!!!
Superb view but the staff was rude and not very helpful. The store was filled with tee shirt type cheap stuff and the prices were high. Well off the beaten path with out much else around. The hours of operation fluctuate.
A staff person named Susan was rude and could not be bothered to answer any of our questions. Gift Shop was disorganized. Clothing thrown about. Very disappointing visit. Could not climb because working on tower and it was not open.
The lighthouse is very well maintained and the staff was very informative and pleasant. The area is beautiful to visit. If you can make the climb to the top, I highly recommend that you do, it is well worth it. The climb to the top is not too bad. There are about 135 step and about 5 landings that you can take a quick rest at. The view from the top is stunning.
This light house and area are in very nice condition. We took my 13 and 14 yr old and we had a nice visit. You can go up in the lighthouse which is a nice view. Cost is only 3$ each. The old lighthouse is only 1 mile away and is also nice.
The climb is not too taxing and the reward is a view that is breathtaking. Friendly and knowledgeable staff make the experience enjoyable and informative.
Lovely museum with Dee as your host makes this experience wonderful. Grounds are open and spacious with a gift shop and opportunity to climb the light. Picnic area, water access and all around peaceful.
Informative receptionist and guide with friendly attitude. We climbed the steps to the top of the lighthouse and had a wonderful view of the water and surroundings.
This is a working lighthouse, very affordable to walk to the top and don't forget your camera to take pictures. While you are here don't miss the old lighthouse as well. The lighthouse keepers house is also open to step back in time. Travel down the road to the end and look back at the lighthouse you will see that it actually leans slightly. If you go around July 4th you can experience an old fashioned parade held here and participate in some fun carnival like games for the kids. Proceeds from the walk to the top helps to maintain this piece of history. The stairs to the top are narrow, but not too many that anyone should be able to travel. Bring a picnic basket and sit at the light house or at the pavilion to enjoy view of the water.
