A group of 6 hired 3 boats with guides for some salmon fishing. I liked the fact that the river went through a reservation, because all trees that fall in the river must be left to nature. This made fishing quite a challenge, but never the less enjoyable.
Went with a local sales rep for the company I work for to really experience Michigan wilderness. I was not disapointed, hooked some brown trout, kayaked a great river and had some amazing nights camping. Camped two nights and kayaked and fished for three days eating what we caught on the second night. We finished up on a Saturday and it was super crowded which is my only complaint but hey it's an awesome river and great places will attract lots of people. Everyone I kayaked past was super friendly and let us by no issues. Trout we caught was awesome, not being a fisherman I never caught or hooked salmon, but that can't take away anything from my trip. Great time, there is an Orvis store near the put in we used that will drive your vehicle to where you leave, it's worth looking for. After 3 days truck was sitting and waiting for us, USE THIS SERVICE for overnight camping if you are going down the river. There are probably several other places that offer this too.
No matter the time of the year we love to come out and fish. Very scenic area with plenty of wildlife. It is always fun and no matter how big or small of a fish you catch, it's a great time.
The Pere Marquette is a great place to fish. My husband and my self have been fishing on the Pere Marquette for years. You want fish this is the place to go..
Lots of twists and bends. Very pretty and quiet. Only issue was there were a lot of obstacles, like downed trees, that kept you working 90% of the time.
One of our favorite rivers for canoeing; some current but easy to maneuver. Several available canoe liveries with brand name canoes in good condition. Easy for beginners. Not polluted or murky. Mainly through forests.
We put in East of Scottville at a township launch site (using our own kayaks) and paddled to the County/DNR launch site across from Henry's Landing. This is a nice portion of the Pere Marquette as it has many bends in the river along with a nice flow so one doesn't have to constantly paddle. We have kayaked this in both early June and September. The river is fairly deep in some areas due to the snow melt and rains in the spring. However, the scenery is truly beautiful...
Went to Ludington last year, rented kayaks and paddled on the lower Pere Marquette. A nice, low key paddle, good scenery and wildlife, with the twist that the river is slow enough that you can paddle around an island -- different from the usual up and back river paddle.
We are a family of four, with the kids aged 14 and 9. Not hard-core paddlers by any means - our experience is limited to rented canoes and kayaks in local lakes and ponds. While staying in Ludington this weekend we wanted to try paddling down Pere Marquette river. After some research we decided to rent a 3-person canoe canoe and a single kayak at River Run Canoe livery. They offer trips from Custer to Scottville. It was perfect! The drive from Ludington to Scottville took only a few minutes and the process of putting us in the water was very simple and smooth. The scenery along the river was beautiful, and the distance we had to paddle was just right - we enjoyed our time on the river but were happy to reach the destination. Glad we did not go to Baldwin which is 40 mins drive from Ludington - it would have made sense for more dedicated paddlers, but for us the trip would have been too long and twice as expensive.
I love, love, love the PM River. My husband and I camp at Henry's Landing located right at the river in Scottville. We kayak different sections of the river several times a month. I love the flora and fawna. I have even kayaked at night when the moon was full. The river is peaceful and beautiful.
Had a delightful day kayaking the Pere Marquette River. It is a very slow, gentle river (would have preferred a faster one), beautiful, and peaceful. We rented kayaks from a place in Scottville (don't remember the name, but only one there) and they were very friendly, helpful and well priced (cash or check). Very close to Ludington, which is where we were staying.
Drove around all the sites checking out the camping and canoeing options. The forests are quite dense and makes for a great outdoor experience. Hiked in a bit and saw amazing wildlife and great photo opts. Want to try the camping next!
Was with friends and caught the biggest brown trout that anyone had ever seen. lots of steelhead that day also
Floated with Baldwin Canoe Rental. The river was beautiful, very curvy, and not very deep. Took longer to complete the float than we thought it would (allow yourself plenty of time).
The Pere Marquette River is quite long and many people are only familiar the slower pace south of Walhalla but the real fun of this river is upstream.Rent a canoe, kayak or raft (preferably the latter two) from either Baldwin Canoe Rental or Ivan's Canoe Rental out of Baldwin, Mi. They will spot you on the river for any length of trip you desire. I like from Gleasons Landing to the S Branch landing which encompasses the exciting Rainbow Rapids. There are occasional places along the shore to stop for a rest, packed lunch or a swim.I wouldn't take kids much younger than 10 down the Rapids portion, for them, go from Baldwin to Bowman bridge or Rainbow Rapids landing, about 500 feet before the rapids.Fun, natural beauty river!
