This store isn't in Osceola proper but rather a small town about 7 miles away called Iconium, population 35. The store itself was built in the early 1900s' and still stands and serves the community. Rather than driving the 7 miles into town for bread or milk, this store can provide the basic necessities. The real magic happens during the late Spring and Summer months. Ico Store (as it is referred to by the locals) opens with extended hours for the tourists who come down to Truman Lake for the fishing as well as the Boy Scouts. Iconium is situated a mile or two from the H. Roe Bartle Boy Scout Camp. During the summer there can be as many as 3,000 boys out there along with counselors, camp cook staff and helicopter moms. The scouts are allowed to go into town for the large selection of pocket knives, scout beads but more importantly..... Peach Floats!. This store buys thousands of cans of Nehi Peach Soda each year and serves it over homemade soft serve ice cream. This delicacy is so popular that it has been featured in all of the local magazines and newspapers and in publications as far away as Kansas City and St. Louis. You can also (depending on the time of year) get a pizza, burger or a bucket of fried chicken (with advanced notice). The best time to visit, other than during the summer, is during a weekday. You might even get in on a Saturday but don't even try on a Sunday. Each Sunday is visitor Sunday at the Scout Camp and the population soars with parents and grandparents driving down from the city to see their precious little one and make sure they are okay. This is a tradition that includes walking down to Ico Store for a Peach Float and some quality time before leaving the dear boys to finish out their time at Scout Camp. On weekends there are picnic tables set out to enjoy the food and sit under the shade. Sometimes you can even catch the neighbor boy next door on his front porch playing a guitar and singing for tips. Even with hundreds of boys lined up outside of the store, it is still quiet and laid back and you get a feeling of what it was like one hundred years ago. The locals who live there will tell you that they get in and get their milk and bread for the weekend on a Thursday morning just so they don't have to deal with the crowds.
After 10 days a Bartle Scout Reservation, there's no other way to reward yourself than with a Peachie. This is one of the only places where you can get Peach Nehi. This store has everything for Boy Scouts and their parents. The highlight of camp for the first year campers is their annual trip to Ico while the older scouts have other ceremonies to attend. Make sure you stop here on your way to or from Boy Scout Camp.
