They must train them to be extra nice, or it's the CT in them that does it. Fun lovely ski area with some nice challenging slopes for families. All the private high schools race here providing some excitement after 3 pm each day. Casual Nastar racing on Sundays and Thursday eves that even the most novice kid can participate in. A GREAT place!
Pretty good for CT. Good for a day trip as the prices are very reasonable and there's a decent amount of slops, certainly better the further you drive but very good if you're thinking about learning.
Great for a quick day trip with family. Reasonably close by. Certainly not a big mountain, for that you need to go to VT where Mt Snow is probably the closest to southern CT. Renting equipment is reasonably quick and the staff is helpful. Parking is easy enough. Forget Southington, Powder Ridge or Mohawk for that matter. If you have the time and ambition, the drive to Butternut just across the border in MA will be worth it.
If you're looking for a fun day out at a CT ski resort, I think you'll enjoy Ski Sundown. We started our son skiing here at the age of 3 and we still enjoy coming back 6 years later. Don't get me wrong, this is not mountain or VT skiing, but it is great for learning and having fun if you don't have time to go up. 4 hour ticket is enough and don't forget to finish in the small bar for a little après ski! Friendly staff and good ski lessons if you need them. Lots of natural snow this year, but good snow making capabilities too. Have fun!
Sundown can offer a little pitch, more so than Southington or the painfully flat Powder ridge. It strikes me about the same size as Mohawk, but unlike Mohawk everything at Sundown has been updated. Sundown has modern lifts, a very nice updated lodge, and a nice cafeteria. The only negative was, and I'm sure they'll figure this out by the time you read it, but in their pub we ordered hot pastrami sandwiches and were amazed to discover virtually no pastrami in them. The bar tender was very nice about it explaining a new, very young chef and replaced it, but only to discover the chef still wasn't issuing more than a slice or two of pastrami! I've never quite understood how food establishments can hire non foodies for their kitchens. But try Sundown for an easy day or afternoon and enjoy. of, and by the way, the pub did have a nice selection of craft brews to taste.
When: I visited this mountain for the first time in December 2014.Who: I went with my two young boys (5 years old and 9 years old) - both snowboarders. They are both beginners.Mountain: Very small mountain. They have one bunny slope this is smaller than a hill in my backyard and another one that is good for beginners. Both have a magic carpet, which is great. You are not allowed to be on the mountain without a ticket - ridiculous! So I am paying $50 for me to go on their snow with now snowboard on so I can teach my kids. They gave some bogus response that "it is an insurance issue". Service: I have to say that the manager I spoke with, woman, was very pleasant and tried to be accommodating. Overall: Very poor experience. Will never go back. Drive the extra 20 minutes to Butternut where it is awesome for learning.
This is a great mountain to teach someone how to ski or snowboard. Be careful of the lift attendants. They don't always pay attention and my son was flattened by a lift once because the young man was dancing to his hip hop and failed to grab the chair and slow it down for him. Otherwise we have had all good experiences over the past 4 years and our kids are enjoying skiing without us driving too far. Maybe too expensive for what you get.
The mountain was fantastic and the skiing conditions were brilliant, much better than mount snow in Vermont which I wasn't expecting. It is only a small mountain but for a day of warming up or learning it's fantastic. I would definitely recommend this place. Thumbs up for ski sundown!
A great place for young beginners to learn but considering how small the mountain is and its location in Northern CT, it was as expensive as many of the larger, more impressive VT & PA ski resorts. Fantastic on a weekday but weekends can get quite crowded.
It's a lot of fun for CT skiing. Clean, relatively well organized, nice trails (we are NOT talking Killington here!) but decent for a fun time. Food and atmosphere are good too. Again - not Vail, not the best of the best - but fun (for CT!)
This is a very small mountain but is great for a quick tune-up or to take lessons at. Watch Friday nights and the weekends as it gets crowded with ski schools.
it costs more for a 4 hour ticket at this place than for a day pass at Mt. Snow, and you get maybe a mountain 1/10th the size. They're still in business because there are really no mountains in CT.
I enjoy the day is was great good for beginner my son took the highest down and also they have free lesson with your pass.
One-by-one my grandchildren have learned to ski at Sundown. The young men and women instructors are outstanding with students of all ages. In a short time, both my granddaughters transitioned from the beginner's area to an adjacent slope and then to the top of the mountain. They were 4 years old when they started, and were skiing with confidence at age 5.
Took my 4 yr old here to teach him how to ski. Perfect bunny hill. Not crowded. Reasonable prices. He picked it up right away. Didn't have to make the trek to VT and take out a 2nd mortgage on rentals and lift tix.
