The Mine Hill Preserve (Roxbury Land Trust) is the site of a 19th century iron-making complex now on the National Register of Historic Places. There are also many trails you can walk all around the area. We followed the donkey trail that was used by donkey pulled carts of iron to the massive blast furnace but after awhile the trail gets more rugged so we opted to go a different way. This site is a fantastic piece of CT history and I'm so very glad it has been preserved as well as it has been. There are remains of the Roasting Ovens; the Blast Furnace and the loading dock area to name a few things. There are very detailed descriptions with old photos at the site to explain what you are looking at currently and what it looked like when it was built. I was extremely impressed with this place because not only are the trails beautiful but there this is a large chunk of history here that is basically unknown to many people of CT. I am very thankful that they were able to get it registered as an historic place so it can be preserved for future generations. This site would be idea for a class trip to learn about local history. But it is an equally perfect place to visit for a hike and to enjoy nature.
