I took my 5 year old daughter, 8 year old son, and 10 year old Niece to Steep Rock in July. The two older kids had developed an interest in nature, and Steep Rock has much to see. There are multiple trails of varying lengths that go throughout the area. We took the longest one (about 4 miles) and worked up to the summit. What a view. On the way back, we made sure to stop and walk through the river every chance we got (make sure to wear proper shoes when doing this as the crayfish will snap at you). Once done, we headed down the street to get pizza in Washington Depot. A beautiful hike with a nice close meal? You can't beat it. Truly Steep Rock is a gem of Washington.
Along the river. Not too hilly. You can make it as long as you wish. The trails are well marked. It's easy to make a loop so you don't have to go out and back.
We started with Steep Rock loop and after reaching the summit, decided to continue on Shinar trail. It was one of the best hikes with well marked trails. We forded (crossed) the farmington river, went through a tunnel and over a bridge. Next time I would wear waterproof shoes but it was well worth it even with sneakers.
Many delicious restaurants, hiking in Steep Rock, the Hickory Stick Bookstore, poking around stores, drives to Woodbury and New Milford, and proximity to Litchfield and other lovely towns.
We enjoyed the hike op to "The Pinnacle" with a great payoff view. The "Lookout" is not nearly as rewarding, and we did not go as far as the Quartz Mine. Bug Spray.
My family loves to hike here during the fall very clean and nice trails. The wild life is awesome and the river is breath taking a must see.
My husband and kids hiked and swam. They had a blast!! The views are phenomenal & the swim was a perfect addition on such a hot summer day! A great way to get out of the house & get those kiddos moving.
Been hiking there for many, many years. Fabulous location. It offers hikes for all hikers from the beginner to the more advanced. Bring a backpack with a snack and enjoy a relaxing lunch by the river or if you're lucky, climb out onto one of the big rocks in the river and truly enjoy the scenery. Hike up to the bridge and enjoy the view or walk along the rail trails. Its all beautiful. Just wish there were bathroom facilities. Especially beautiful in the Fall.
Wonderful location for hiking. The hike up to the overlook is wonderful! Fantastic view of the river below, and miles of hills and trees. Very pretty in Fall, too!
