This is definitely a trip i will never forget. While we camped for the week on Virginia's west side mountain range we traveled south to the town of Buchanan some two hours from Luray. This trip to the James River was my wife's idea. We book the longest and earliest trip launch 7:30am, burrrrr. The fog was still hanging around the river and it was a chilly start. Now, I've been on a canoe in a lake, but not a river. You can here the beauty of this river in the quietness and at time the low roar of the waters down river. We hopped into our canoe (after the mandatory safety video) and paddled away. It wasn't until about 5 minuets in that we heard our first white water. We slowly approached it and neither one of us new how to attack it! So upon my stupid request, i said to my wife "go through the clear water not the rapids. Well my mistake! Hahahahah I still laugh at this. We hit a bolder and my wife flew into the river! Since we were stuck on the bolder she was able to quickly jump back in. The next 6 -8 miles of rapids were still to be conquered. You can enjoy such beautiful scenery as you go down river. A freight train came by and to look at it from the water was like looking at a painting. The water was clear and only about 8 feet deep in most areas. When we approached our next set of rapids we took the white water approach. Success! and what fun, my wife was still in the canoe! We pulled off to the waters edge to have some lunch before we continued or trip. We carried a small waterproof camera for pictures. What you need to know. Book early at least two weeks before you go as they fill fast. You will get a mandatory safety video prior to your trip. You will receive a water proof pack for your belongings and a map of your destination. They can not tell you how to get through the rapids as they told us just do it. All your pricing and trip times are on there website. We chose the Horseshoe Bend to Buchanan (3 - 4 hours, 9 miles) trip. The longer trip past this one has rapids for the more advanced canoe rider. Our trip was $35.00 per person for the canoe rental. Rafts are available but must have 3 or more people to rent one. We did the 4hr. trip in a little over 2 hours. My wife and I still talk about this excursion and her trip into the drink! We had made a suggestion to the owners once we headed back to the office that they should buy Go Pro cameras and rent them out for a fee so people can video there trip. So bring one if your going just in case they don't offer them.Enjoy your trip!

The overall experience was interesting and pretty fun. The one thing I wish they would have done is give some lazy river type rapids before directly shooting the customers into a level 1 rapid zone right off the bat. Pay attention to the safety brief, you will need to use that information later on.

If you are looking for a relatively safe and fun way to spend a day try tubing with Twin Outfitters. Anyone 6 and over can go as long as you can swim. (Life jackets are provided) If you are looking for hair raising rapids this is not the place for you. We opted for the tube all day option. Each run takes approximately 90 minutes. There are several class 1 rapids but most of the time is spent floating on the river. We saw turtles, fish, ducks and geese along the way. The employees are very nice and accomodating. They gave us a rope so that we could tether our tubes together so as not to get separated. When we returned and asked to go again they took us immediately with no wait. The parking area had picnic tables so we could eat lunch between runs.

We had such a brilliant time kayaking down from Springwood to Buchanan. The staff were efficient and friendly and also reassuring to two of our party who were a bit nervous about capsizing. This is an easy kayaking trip with Class I rapids which we really enjoyed. We stopped off once but mainly just kept paddling and enjoying the sunshine (suncream is a must and make sure you don't miss any patches!) and the peacefulness of the river..... And the turtles and dragonflies. The safety briefing was helpful. The facilities here are better than I expected with a shop to stock up on anything you might have missed and two restrooms and a changing room.We bought vouchers for our relatives to go again and we would be back very soon.... Except we live 4,000 miles away so it won't be straightaway!

We went tubing on the James River with Twin River Outfitters yesterday. I enjoyed being able to reserve our spots online so that we knew they would have room for us on the day we chose, and I was shocked that they didn't require payment up front. We arrived and even though we were early they went ahead and took us upriver to start our first trip down. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and they seemed very concerned with safety without being uptight about it. Their facilities are simple but well-maintained, with 2 restrooms and a changing room available. They also offer some picnic tables if you want to bring a meal with you, but we walked just about a block and a half to The Fountain (I just reviewed them, too, y'all - you've gotta try them!) for lunch. Worth every penny and we will definitely be back.

Twin Rivers offers a good variety of paddle trips, of differing skill levels and lengths. these are along the Upper James and its tributaries in a beautiful and wild area of Virginia. TRO's shop in Buchanan provides all of the supplies necessary to paddle the river; guided trips or kayaks to rent to paddle on your own. They also have good deals on kayaks to buy. Their staff is knowledgable and fun. For something a bit different try a tube float on a hot day!!Whether you want to fish, run some easy Class I and II rapids, or simply enjoy the sheer beauty of the river, TRO has the trip for you.
