We didn't stay there long. We stopped by to get local information. The staff were VERY friendly and helpful. We didn't have time to visit the museum itself, but again... the staff were very friendly and helpful. Stop by for a nice greeting and some helpful information about the area...

My husband and I were camping over at the local Natural Chimney's. It was a rainy day and went to the Heritage House to check it out. The clerk was very informative and gave us three choices to start with. 1st General Sherman's map, 2 nd the heritage museum and 3rd Genealogy. We chose to see the map first. The map and the audio of the battles was interesting, but needs to be updated with pictures of the areas they talk about. Now, with the museum I found interesting with the different displays of how life was in the past of this area. That part is worth seeing going from one building to another.

I'm a proud member of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society and have taken several friends and visitors to the Heritage Museum in Dayton, VA and they have all been very impressed with and thoroughly enjoyed the electric map showing Stonewall Jackson's famous 1862 Civil War Valley Campaign and the exhibits and galleries showing the very interesting history of the beautiful central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia! I highly recommend this attraction be put at the top of your "Bucket List"!

The Heritage Museum in Dayton, VA (just South of Harrisonburg) is advertised as the Shenandoah Valley’s “Best-kept Secret”, and we agree! The facility is much larger than it appears from the exterior, with extensive galleries focusing on the history of the valley, valley folk art, and the Civil War in the Valley. One of the highlights is a large electric map (thirteen or fourteen feet tall) with more than 300 LED lights and a video narration describing and vividly showing the flow of Union and Confederate forces up and down the valley during Stonewall Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign. The light displays put all elements of the campaign into an understandable context and sequence and should be interesting to Civil War experts and neophytes alike. An added attraction is the Genealogy Library (the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society Genealogy Library), a neat, well-organized collection of materials focusing on Rockingham and other local counties. The Heritage Museum is only four or five miles South of Harrisonburg. With its electric map and outstanding galleries it is well worth the time and effort to get there; we will definitely go back!

The Heritage Museum is a great place to visit. Brings history to life and appeals to all age groups. Nice bookstore and gift shop.

Get your bearings at The Heritage Museum, a first stop in your visit to the fabled Shenandoah Valley. See an extensive chronological display of the valley's history and settlement, including interactive monitors of Civil War action and stories of the people involved. It also has a folk art exhibit, a genealogy library, and special rotating exhibits of past and current history. A special feature is the wall size map of Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, complete with audio and strategic troop movements. Now an 'official' visitors center for the region, the museum also has brochures, walking tours, maps, and information to plan your entire visit.

A wonderful treat tucked into Dayton. The Civil War map and exhibits were first class, even better than the national park museum in Gettysburg
