Hey, it's a cemetery. What do you want? Saw lots of headstones. Apparently Stonewall liked lemonade and someone still delivers fresh lemons to his grave site. Interesting!
Anyone looking for things to do while staying in Lexington VA must check this place out. It is neat to see all the old tombstones & who all is buried here. There is a little walking to do but it is worth it.
I love old cemeteries and this did not disappoint me. Burial sites of famous people are well marked on a sign at the entrance of the cemetery. It was easy to find.
the cemetery was not well kept many of the stones looked like they were going to fall over. However the grass was mowed and we were able to walk through easily
It wasn't much trouble to stop and stroll the cemetery and there were a few interesting tombstones but I don't rate it nearly a high as some other posts. To each his own.
Really enjoyed walking thru the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery. You can really see a piece of history and the lives of those that fought in the Civil War then came home. Fascinating!
On the downside there is no map of the cemetery, but you can't miss Stonewall and the civil war soldiers all have CSA markers to distinguish them Several of the older stones are difficult to read and could benefit from a restoration/cleaning project or a handout that tells you what is on them. Several unusual names. A good addition to the historical walking tour of the town.
Very cool attraction that is well worth the time. Our Carriage ride driver said there are veterans from every American war buried here. Obviously heavy on the Civil War, but still very interesting
Pointed out as part of the walking tour of the area. Worth the trip (and you could drive and park out front).
History buffs will love this. The statue of Stonewall Jackson is quite memorable. You can park right on the street alongside the cemetary or you can take a carriage ride and listen to the tour guide tell you all about the history of the cemetery and Lexington as well.
We took the walk through the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery as it was on the way downtown. It has some intriguing stones and markers. It is interesting that the markers include ages and relationships to that person. Some of the stones are so worn that you can't read them! They are over 200 hundred years old! The history in the cemetery is interesting and although combing through a cemetery is not for everyone it will certainly pertain to history buffs. A good stop to make while you're in town.
The obvious attraction is Stonewall Jackson's grave and memorial but there were a number of other interesting memorials to be found, including that of his first wife and her family. We went fairly early in the morning and were enchanted to see three deer moving around the stones.
Unassuming cemetery with lots of old headstones. Sparked some questions from our teenagers. If in Lexington, it's a quick stop to add to your list. I would recommend the Lexington Visitors Center whose staff was very helpful as we're all of the walking tour maps etc they provided.
As any cemetery, it is a very solemn and tranquil place. Jackson's burial spot is located centrally under his statue.Lying nearby is his aide Sandie Pendleton and his father who was Jackson's chief artillerist. Interesting stop.
We stopped at the cemetery prior to continuing on our vacation. This is definitely a place to visit, especially with school age children. We can teach about American history but walking through this cemetery and seeing the comments on the grave markers as well as the historical aspects bring history to life.
