The tasting room is an old barn that has been redone, and it's amazing inside. They also have lots of tables with umbrellas around the grounds, and encourage you to enjoy your picnics there. The wines were so-so, but we easily found a bottle to enjoy with our picnic lunch. We didn't try any, but they also have some food that you can order.
We've been going here since it opened and seen the popularity of this particular vineyard soar it's one place we've remained loyal club members and go there a few times a month. The reds and whites alike are particularly good and regularly award winning. They've done what they can to keep it pleasant and comfortable for their return / faithful customers in spite of the throngs but some might still find it overly crowded on weekends. Some of the reviews I've read are poor simply because they've instituted some restrictions on the wine bus/limo crowds that overwhelm the regular patrons with massive limo's full of drunk partiers with a 'designated driver' and excuse to drink til they drop - its been something of a problem recently in Loudoun. Seriously the drunken rolling bridal showers on wheels are getting really annoying. Unfortunately you've ruined it for those who love the idea of a leisurely limo as more and more vineyards begin to clamp down and say 'Please don't stop here'. Nevertheless as I said the food and wine is excellent, the atmosphere quaint but often crowded (don't blame the vineyard) and the owners friendly. It's the best in Loudoun try it you'll love it.
We went with the kids one Saturday afternoon; just looking to get out of the house. What a great time! The musicians engaged my 7 year old wanna be rock star and we liked to selection of tunes. The food was a little pricey, but tasted yummy! Wines, like most VA vineyards, are so-so... This really isn't the place for stellar wines, especially if you are from California. Regardless, we will go back. A winery isn't just about the wine- it's about the people too- and we thought these folks were great!
Want a relaxing outlet, with a great ambiance and plenty of outside space, then visit sunset hills winery.? We tried the wine tasting, very knowledgeable and entertaining server, and then had lunch with the best wine on the list. Lovely freshly baked bread, great Camembert dressed with honey, excellent prosciutto, all in all a place with a difference BUT we have to say we felt the overall quality of the wines to be disappointing, but that may be because the grape varieties were relatively unknown to us europeans
Our group of six 30 to 50 somethings visited this winery, based on the suggestion of a sommelier friend at a popular high-end restaraunt in DC. We chose the safe route, and took a limo bus from Arlington to Purcellville (over an hour each way). After one bottle of wine (for six people!), we were cut off. This was only our second stop. As a group of laid back, coherent, professionals- not causing any sort of a scene, we were obviously a little taken aback. We were told that because we arrive in a limo bus, they did not feel comfortable selling us wine. What? Makes no sense. However, they had no issue serving multiple bottles of wine to parents that brought their children. I was sure to point out a particular table of two parents, four kids, and two bottles of wine to the owner, Mike. He offered up a "your next visit is on us" as compensation. Probably not. Not worth the drive (or limo bus ride!(
My wife and I went here with another couple as part of a weekend wine tasting tour and we were not disappointed in the least. Our pourer was extremely knowledgable and really took the time to make sure we had a great experience. We brought along a picnic lunch and enjoyed a bottle of the Chardonnay as well as the music. Very picturesque and relaxing atmosphere. We will definitely be back.
Great location with scenic vineyard & friendly staff. Small improvements could make this an A+.Dislikes:- Food - Cheese and meats were served inside the plastic wrappers and were very difficult to open especially given the cost. Bread was excellent. - 80's Music - bad choice of music for fall afternoon.- Random pictures rotating on inside TVs. It looked like the owners personal travel pictures, but didn't fit with the other decor.
Awesome service-fantastic wine-beautiful sceneries and what an awesome touch with the cracker-bread-cheese and meat trays.
Stopped by Sunset Hills on a girls weekend & i was so glad we did!! sunset hills definitely was at the top of my must stop list and their wines did not disappoint! I was a little bummed about the setting, it was nice but not spectacular.
This winery and vineyard had nice staff but they seemed to get overwhelmed when they had more than 4 people for a tasting. The wine was OK, not much of a range of flavors or options. Tasting is $10 a person. They have a lot of seating but apparently only certain areas are open during the day.
The setting of Sunset Hills is in the Loudoun Valley just a few miles north of Purcellville. The wines are generally of good quality and have won a number of awards.Pluses: The wines are of a consistently good quality. I’ve visited several times and have enjoyed most of their wines. There were a couple I was not thrilled about; but, everyone has their own taste preferences and the ones I didn’t like were certainly not bad. The winery buildings are certainly one of the highlights. They are large post-and-beam style buildings that were built by Amish craftsmen and very architecturally interesting.Negatives: The tasting price is a bit high. It’s not by any means outrageous, but maybe a few dollars too dear. There are several wineries in Virginia that can charge as much as Sunset Hills, but Sunset Hills is really not yet at the quality point where they can charge a premium tasting price.
I would recommend this for a nice Saturday afternoon lunch trip near Leesburg, VA. The wine is very surprising for a Virginia wine. The overall location and layout are very nice and laid back.
Our wine tasting server, Kate was outstanding as she carefully explained the differences between the wine we tasted. We then had lunch on the upstairs outside patio which added to the great overall experience.
this is my favorite winery in loudoun county. this is our go-to and we are always happy to be here. great atmosphere, great tasting room and beautiful views of the mountains. great wine as well.
Sunset Hills is a beautiful winery with some good wines! The Viognier and Petit Verdot were excellent in our opinion. The tasting was done by the tasting room manager who was so knowledgeable about the wines as well as the vineyard. The atmosphere, a beautifully converted barn, was wonderful. The view from the decks were very nice. Wish we had more time to stay and relax with a glass of wine! Worth a second visit when we have more time!
