We found this site because of a nearby geocache. Nice area, glad we stopped. Yes, it's off the beaten path, but that's the fun of discovering what an area has to offer. The river is beautiful in this area.
native peoples used natural depressions in rocks as mortars to grind seeds into flour, over time these wore deeper and deeper, creating significant circular "holes" in solid rock, this is a good example as part of a pleasant nature walk along the river
The Indian punch bowl in Fredricksburg is a large rock with a perfect bowl shape carved into it. It is said the Native Americans used it to dip their arrows in poison. It is situated in a small park overlooking the Rappahannock river. This a great park to go exploring the river is beautiful, full of rapids and about 100 foot from the punch bowl we found a prehistoric booted footprint imbedded in the rocks by the river. If you like to see things the normal tourist doesn't this is a good start.
