The park is having the trees reforested, and it's a GREAT family place to visit. There is so much to do here and in the surrounding area. You'll have a great time hiking, fishing and visiting with other campers.

Our park here in Bastrop is lovely. The fires of 2011 destroyed the trees, but they have been replanted. Come watch nature bring a park back to life.

I wish I had been to this park before the big fire. It is interesting to look at now, but must have been stunning before. Lots of hiking trails with nice elevation changes. Full RV hookups. Nice view from either side in the Piney Hill section. Nice, GIANT bathrooms. Dishwashing sinks available near the bathrooms too.

The park itself is small, you can probably hike all the trails in a day. That was nice, but sad to see all the fire destruction. We stayed in Cabin #2 (I wish I had read the reviews before we booked) - there is definitely a vermin problem. Not an issue, if we'd been made aware so we could have put up our food. But our fruit for breakfast was eaten, and chips bags were eaten through. Bugs in the cabin, not a big deal, but we should have probably just taken a tent - $90 didn't seem worth the price for the 2 person cabin.

This is a very nice state park. The scenery is not good bc of the fire but other than that it's great. The bathrooms are all brand new. They're climate controlled and clean. There's also a dish washing station! Our site was 61 in Copperas Creek and it was very nice. The kids loved the trails. The park rangers were very nice. Fire wood is cheaper than in town. Borrowed fishing poles from the main office with ease. Playground is nice. Quite time is actually quite at this park. It was nice. There was road noise from hwy 71 but this was a great park.

It was clean, had many amenities and a buffet for breakfast. It has doors that lead to the hall instead of the parking lot.

We arrived Jan 2 for 2 nights. Be aware if you book a Fri you must stay Sat as well. I found this out when I originally tried to book just Thurs/ Fri. We were flexible but, not willing to pay for 3 nights for a big cabin. We stayed in #9 which has a magnificent view. It slept 6. All other cabins are close but, not intrusive. There are smaller but, not avail when I booked. The cabins are no frills. They contain a narrow 3 piece bathroom w/o tub. A room off the kitchen w/ a table and 3 chairs, it also had a wall heater and door to outside. The kitchen had cook top, no stove, microwave and a fireplace we were not to use. There was also a small fridge like in a hotel. There were also 2 beds in the room w/ the functioning fireplace and a wall heater. This also had a door to the outside. One more seperate room had a bed w/ a wall heater. It was in the 30's while we were there. If the temps are like this when you go know you must purchase and/ or bring all things necessary for the fireplace ie wood/ matches/ firestarter, hatchet, etc. Wood is avail at the park ofc for ~50 cents/ pc. There are no fireplace tools either. The kitchen has no cooking utensils, soap, towels, coffee maker, toaster, etc. There is also no phone/ radio/ tv/ internet. My cell phone worked fine. The bathroom has one towel/ facecloth provided/ person(6 since 6 person cabin). The beds were very comfy and had basic linens. There are no extra linens nor any lamps in the cabin. We brought extra blankets but, were told to do so because of the temps. The floors were tile and very cold, we needed slippers or shoes all the time. The fireplace did a great job of heating our sleeping area and if you kept the doors closed between rooms, it was also a benefit. The damper for the fireplace had no real adjustment. It was either all the way open or all closed. Thusly, wood burned fast w/ so much updraft.Cabins were easy to find w/ good signage in the park. The numbers on cabins hard to see until you found one then knew where to look on the others. It is about a 10 min drive into town w/ multiple options for dining/ antiquing. The park is beautiful even w/ the forest damage from fire a few years back. It is coming back and is well maintained. It was a busy place and the staff was present/ seen often. The trails are well marked and different levels of workout. It is a hilly park so biking/ running/ hiking can be very strenuous at times. We loved it and plan to go back.

My husband and I stayed in Cabin #3 at Bastrop State Park, to ring in the New Year. We arrived new year’s eve 2014, and left on 02JAN2015. The cabin was lovely. It accommodates 6 people, with 3 double beds. The room was very clean. I was surprised that bed linen, towels, and toilet paper were all provided, as we were used to camping, and this was the first time we had stayed in the cabins. It will not be the last time! We loved it. The main room consists of a double bed, a large fireplace, and a dining table and chairs to accommodate 4 ppl. The other room had two double beds in it. The bathroom was quite large. It has a shower, sink, and toilet, so you do not need to use the public shower facilities, unless your group of 6 doesn’t want to wait to use the one bathroom. The kitchen consists of a sink, microwave, small refrigerator, and stovetop (no oven). Outside is a fire ring, with a grate, if you wish to cook outside. It was cold, and the weather was bad, so we stayed in the very cozy cabin for the entire weekend, It was really wonderful. The office worker Jennifer and the park ranger Josh, who both had to work on the holiday, were both very friendly and helpful, and not at all complaining about working the holiday shift! Cabin #3 is a stone cabin, built by the army corp of engineers, back under FDR administration, so there is a bit of history to it. I believe all of the cabins were built between 1934-1935, but some are stone, and some are made of wood. In addition to the large fireplace, there is a window unit that works both as air conditioning and heat. We had the heat on, and along with the fireplace, were very warm. I will say that the other room, with the two beds, was quite a bit colder than the main room, but for us it was not a problem. It would easily accommodate a family, or 3 sets of couples, but the layout of the cabin beds means that there would be no privacy, so if you are going for romance, rent the cabin by yourselves!

This park has a nicely planned swimming area, you can get to waters edge with a wheelchair if desired. Park is kept nice and clean. Plenty of great setups for camping or tenting!

I loved the hiking trails. Even though a great deal of the forest was destroyed by fire, it is still a pretty hike.

The lost pines that made up this park where mainly destroyed by wildfire in 2011. Having seen it prior to burn it was sad to see the devastation. Rangers helpful, sites were nice.

Ugh Brenda E's review below really pisses me off. I've been visiting this park for 40 years since I was a small child. Stayed in just about every cabin. Cabins 1-5 are the originals and my favs, built by CCC in 30's. Cabins 1&2 are the best for 2-4 people. The kitchen in #1 is very small, but has the best backyard patio area, and most secluded. The cabins were taking to long to build, so they switched to wood for cabins 6-11. They're okay too, but the originals are more interesting and better locations. They are made from the land out of huge stone and log, built into the land to blend in. They are rustic, humble and not for someone looking for something resorty or fancy. But their history and uniqueness is what make them so wonderful. Cabin 12 is perfect for groups of friends or multiple families and has become our biannual go to cabin. There's a great video on youtube of this cabin. In #12, you have a huge private backyard area and can fish in the lake from your backyard. A tip is always bring your own towels/linens/pillows for comfort. The ones provided are pretty bad. For bikers or scenic drivers, the ride from the cabins up to Buescher State park is great. The hiking trails are quiet and peaceful, and you can come across neat landmarks and reminders of the depression era time when the CCC workers were living there and constructing the park. The fire was devastating and it's nice to see the rebirth and tree planting. It saddens me that I will never see the park in my lifetime as it once was, but happy that other generations will for a long time to come. This park is not the best in central Texas. Garner and Pedernales are more scenic. But the history, resilience, and lifetime memories are what keep me coming back and supporting this park every year. I never mind giving them my money.

Don't believe the pictures of the park on the website. It's ugly and the lake is awful. We didn't enjoy our time there at all. The cabin was a joke. There were dead bugs on the cooktop when I checked in. We were forced to rent a cabin that provided beds for 5 people even though my 3 sons always sleep in the same bed. Despite the fact that they made the decision for me about how many beds my family needed they didn't bother to provide enough chairs for us all to sit in around the table. There were only 3 chairs in a cabin meant to sleep 5!!!

The park is well kept. The area is breath taking. The camping spots are large, concrete and clean. Enjoyed a long relaxing weekend with dogs. Will definitely return!

This is our "home park" but we don't get here as often as we should. Lots to do here, which makes it a great day trip or camping. You can hike, bike, fish, geocache, and swim. Camping for tents, RVs, even cabins. Newly remodeled bathrooms and shower houses. It's connect to Buescher State Park, doubling the opportunities.A huge wildfire burned 97% of the park in 2011, so there is fire damage and lots of dead trees. But that has made way for new plants to grow that were not commonly seen here before. All of the buildings were saved, though, and all of the camp sites and such are back to normal. If you want to see the "before" picture, go over to Buescher which has a similar ecosystem and was unaffected by the fire. There are usually programs offered here, such as guided hikes, fishing clinics, nigh hikes, and lectures. Check the calender when you visit. The park is five minutes from the town of Bastrop, so you can get dinner downtown in any number of hometown restaurants, tube or kayak on the Colorado River, hit up a farmer's market, go to the store, see a movie, etc. It's great to be able to go from camp to town without a hassle if you need to...or if you need some A/C in the summer.
