I have lived on this lake for 10+ years and visited it for 60 years. It is not a constant level lake leaving it to suffer low water levels during drought years. Fishing has always been good on this lake and walking the low water shoreline can be very interesting. Even during drought times this lake is very large and be dangerous if you are out in a boat when the winds kick up. When the lake is full there is not better place.
We spent 3 days on Lake Buchanan and never saw anyone except one couple checking their fishing lines. They commented, "This is like having a private lake," and we totally agreed. Even though the lake is down 30% from a previous drought, it is still pretty and we caught 3 fish from the bank.
Black Rock Campground is quite nice and under steady improvement by the Colorado River Authority. Large trees are welcome shade in the RV section, where we stay whenever Ink's Lake State Park is full. Cabins are popular, as are tenting sites, where we often observe large groups, such as scouting associations. Their morning and evening flag ceremonies and drill, are an encouragement that our nation still encourages patriots. Thank you dedicated Volunteers, your service is duly noted. DaFlikkers.blogspot
It was nice and relaxing, but the lake is very low and silty. The fishing was not great, because the water is so low and silted. We kayaked and just enjoyed being on the water.
Lake Buchanan, like many lakes in Texas, is suffering from the draught. It is extremely low with most of the marinas and swimming areas now on dry land. But, there are still many places to access the lake. Pray for rain!It is a beautiful lake and has a historic style dam. With more water, it would be simply outstanding.
Visited the dam. Since 9/11 one cannot get anywhere near the dam and a vantage point to view it properly is not available. The beach front is presently 1000 ft from the nearest water.
I thought Buchanan was the largest of the Highland Lakes, I thought a nice getaway from the crowds coming out of Austin in the weekend. But I was quite disappointed, it is almost dry. The Canyon of the Eagles park offers some hikes, but the lakeside trails are not fantastic if there is no lake...
My whole family went fishing there, given it was a long time ago, but I remember that we had a great time. Spend the whole weekend there.
With all the hype and truth about the drought and low water - Lake Buchanan is a survivor. Fished there recently - was was 47 feet deep where we fished, and we were catching white bass and stripers - it was a good day on the water! There are places to launch your big boat, the water has (of course) receded far out in some spots, but it is STILL a beautiful lake worthy of visiting....
I been living on Lake Buchanan since 1997 and see it full just a few times. As of 2/8/13 the lake is down to the river, but it make for good fishing, some big striped bass and eagles live around the lake in the winter time.Lake Buchanan keeps Inks,LBJ and lake Marble Falls full.Right now is the to see the old town Bluffton.
we had a great time, though it's sad how dry the lake is. as of 11/2012, 27+ feet below level. we took the "Bald Eagle Tour" on the double decker boat. I loved it. Great price and smooth ride The guide was very knowledgable and had great stories about the history of the lake and surrounding area's. Didn't see any bald eagles but saw lots of other wildlife including a huge flock of pelicans! Who knew? All in all well worth it.
So sad that the lake is down over 50% and the visitor center permanently closed. It's just not very pretty.
We rented kayaks on Lake Buchanan. The lake is huge and quite lovely, even under drought conditions. We had a very fun kayaking experience. I agree that this is one of the prettiest lakes in Texas. Pray for rain.
Pretty views, amazing sky at night. Sad that the drought has caused so much wear.
Lake Buchanan is low right now, but when it is full, it is my favorite lake. It is clean and huge. It has many sandy beaches and even gorgeous waterfalls! It is in the hill country of Texas which proved a stunning backdrop for an already gorgeous lake. We boat, ski, tube, camp and fish. My husband loves to catch stripper on this lake. I did see fishing boats on the lake this weekend!
