With an emphasis on local family life in the last century and a small but impressive civil war and American Indian collection, the Layland Museum in Cleburne is a small town treasure. Housed in a beautiful and historical turn-of-the century Carnegie Building, this former library has been lovingly restored and maintains a research library for those interested in tracing their past in Johnson County. Year-round activities for both adults and children encompass a variety of educational and fun opportunities.

Museum was very well laid out and signage was excellent! Had interesting artifacts and information we'd not seen elsewhere! Volunteer on duty was very welcoming and well informed. Glad we made the trip! Nice antique stores in walking distance on town square.

This is a great place if you don't have much time or if you want to linger. Many areas of Texas life with historical elements are on display. Indian artifacts, cowboy gear, and a variety of different collections changed out every few months. There is a great early taxidermy piece, which we called a mermaid when I was younger, that looks like half monkey and half fish. This piece moves around but is always on display somewhere! Keep your eye out for it while browsing. There is also a great gift shop with unusual finds and many books by local writers and artist.

If you are ever passing through Cleburne, TX or are planning to visit, do yourself a favor and go to the Layland museum. This historical landmark is full of Texas history, American history, and Cleburne history. What impressed me the most is their personal tribute to the hands of women who worked in Cleburne. They had about 12 women cast their hands in plaster, and displayed it, along with a mini history of each women. I really liked the personal town histories this museum includes. It made for an overall rewarding experience.
