Without detracting from the building and exhibits - the "downside" of the facility is that it is an "Amtrak" station - so people will likely associate it with delays delays, and more delays as is Amtrak's signature.Fortunately the Museum gives delayed travelers something to do while they wait and wait some more. There is a lot of history here - both local and regional - and it's a tribute to the visionary folks who preserved this station and the items on exhibit. It's free and definitely worth a visit even if you don't plan on taking the train!
Neat place to take the kids - we had a fun time and learned a lot too. Kept the whole family entertained and we had fun.
If you like small town history, railroad history, or trains, you'll love this little fully restored historical whistle stop depot in one of East Texas' most notable "railroad towns" that popped up during the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War. The station isn't THAT old, but pretty close. It's been immaculately restored and serves as an Amtrak stop on the American Eagle route.
Nice little museum and tribute to their depot. Very well presented and informative. We enjoyed the display and would recommend it to anyone with a little time to kill. The restrooms are always clean and the air conditioning makes it comfortable inside.
The Railroad Museum is housed in the back part of the Mineola Depot which has been restored back to its 1906 appearance and is currently an Amtrak designated stop. The Railroad memorabilia dates back to the early 1900's and though not as extensive as the Cotton Belt Railroad Museum in nearby Tyler, Texas it is worth a stop if only for the shiny red caboose parked outside the depot. The Mineola Depot and Railroad Museum is open 7 days a week from 9 am - 5 pm.There is ample parking nearby and it is Handicap Accessible. The town of Mineola is conveniently located on Hwy. 80 & 69, 15 miles from I-20 on Hwy 69, 35 miles from Interstate 30. Mineola is 1.5 hours East of Dallas TX and 2 hours West of Shreveport LA.
