Just a short drive out of Sundance, WY, on a pleasant 2-lane road, take You to one of the High Points of the Bear Lodge Mountains. Even without the Lookout Tower, the view is Amazing. At night You can see the lights of Deadwood.!!! If the Lookout Tower is manned and open, the Fire-Spotter there is Friendly and Welcoming. Even if the Lookout Tower is unmanned and "closed" You can still climb up the stairs and have Breath-taking Views of the Area. Great time to "get-out-of-the-car-and-play"!!!! Don't miss it...and ITS FREE!!!!
Totally worth the trip up the mountain. And climb the tower when you get up there! You can see for miles and miles.
While visiting the WY Information Center on I-90 I asked Steve about out-of-way places to visit. He suggested going to Warren Peak outside of Sundance. The road is Road 838 off of Rt 14 and you travel 7 miles up the mountain. The last 1/4 mile is on a loose gravel road. Once you reach the peak, you have a magnificent view for miles. For an added thrill, you can climb the Forest Service Fire Tower that sits atop the peak. And what's the best it's FREE.....and hardly anyone goes. Take a picnic lunch with you.The peak is not handicap friendly if you are in a wheelchair as you're standing on gravel.
Great view. Fun and easy climb up steps to top. Just outside of Sundance, WY. Beautiful area -- don't miss this free stop!
If you have a few minutes when there isn't snow, drive west on highway 14 from Sundance for about one mile and turn on Cook Lake Road. Drive about five miles to the tower. The view is great. In the summer you may find a ranger at the tower. You can see Devils Tower on a clear day as well as Montana, South and North Dakota.
