Glad I braved the cold and saw the beautiful blankets, scarves etc as well as the beautiful pottery for sale at this well kept secret at Ghost Ranch of the wonderful archeological and paleontolical museum where bones older than jurassic era were found at the local digging sites in the summer.Very informative and entertaining
We drove north from Santa Fe to the little town of Abiquiu to attend the tour that we had found on the internet. But once you are in Abiquiu, you need to go about 17 more miles north! The estate that you find is also a Presbyterian Retreat Camp. Because my wife is a watercolorist, we had an interest in what O'keefe saw in painted from her home there. The tour begins at 1:30pm, if there are enough reservations, there will be a second tour at 3:00pm. The tour is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, March 11- November 29. We paid $29/person. We had to sign a release before proceeding with the tour and were given a badge and lanier. The tour because at the Retreat Office with a short film about Georgia O'keefe and the area. Then we loaded on to a small but very clean and comfortable bus. The tour guide was very well prepared with her talk and her props-copies of O'keefe's work. We moved on to a dirt road and proceeded into the area near her home. The bus stopped several times, unloaded us at particular points of interest, backed off 50 yards so we didn't have to deal with the bus exhaust, then returned to pick us up after the tour guide was finished telling us about that particular place. We did get a look at O'keefe's house from a distance but apparently, that is a different tour if you want to go inside! The guide's presentation was extremely interesting even for non-painters. She was very knowledgeable of the history of O'keefe and her interaction with her neighbors as well as knowledgeable of her style of painting.
