I have been to this studio several times. The owners are often dyeing and/or weaving at the studio/store. The sheep for the wool are right outside in the pasture. It is very informative and interesting place. The quality of the weaving is exquisite. They sell their own very expensive art pieces as well as other local artists: purses, jackets, shawls, etc. One of the items I particularly find of interest are some heritage blankets made of natural woolen yarns...subtle and beautiful. This is true treasure place.
Stunning hand woven items. From blankets to wall hangings and scarves. Very high quality. It is not inexpensive nor should it be.
Owned by award-winning weavers Irvin and Lisa Trujillo, a trip into their gallery and studio is a wonder-filled education into the art, practices, cultural history and traditions of weaving in this area. From spinning to hand-dying (using natural dyes) to creating gorgeous tapestries of design, these talent weavers will give you a new appreciation of weaving in the Chimayo style. The gallery carries works by Irvin and Lisa as well as other talented individuals. Products range from traditional blankets to pillows to purses, jackets and vests, and all are fairly priced for the quality of fine art you receive. If nothing else, be sure to purchase a copy of their book, The Centinela Weavers of Chimayo: Unfolding Tradition, to take a piece of history with you and provide preparation for shopping on your next trip!
Just East of Chimayo, NM on the high road to Taos we stopped at Centinela Traditional Arts, a weaving and textile studio and gallery. It is the studio of renowned weavers Irvin and Lisa Trujillo. They also host the work of a number of skilled local weavers and textile artisans. We found rugs and blankets in the Spanish colonial style, as well as jackets, etc. Lisa was working at her loom, and graciously explained the deep local weaving tradition. This gallery is not like some arcades by the plaza in Santa Fe where one haggles over the price of rugs of dubious origins. It is an artists gallery where the value of the goods is evident and the prices are very fair. We purchased a Rio Grande style blanket, and Lisa efficiently prepared it for UPS shipment to our home. A gem of a textile arts gallery at the heart of a living tradition. Check out their website http://www.chimayoweavers.com
