The Fountain Theater boasts some of the most interesting history in the area. The theater itself is run by volunteers. The building is historic and isn't the most cozy but it is quite quaint. The staff is friendly and the movie prices are cheap. The films screened are generally artsy or independent which makes for a much better experience than the terrible Allen theater company experience one might have when visiting Las Cruces. The snack bar serves freshly made popcorn and has a variety of spices, seasonings to put on popcorn, the bar next door serves wine and overall it is worth a trip to experience something different in the little city of Las Cruces.

We are always looking for something new and interesting to do for date night, so we decided to visit the Historic Fountain Theater in Old Mesilla to see a movie. This is a small historic theater run by volunteers from Mesilla Valley Film Society. The Mesilla Valley Film Society is a nonprofit organization which presents alternative, foreign and independent films. We arrived early, not knowing what to expect, however, the theater only opens 30 minutes before the film begins, so we went down the street to the Double Eagle for a fantastic margarita. Admission prices to the theater are $7 for a regular show, $6 for a matinee and $5 for members. Seniors over 60, military and students with ID $6 and Wednesday $5. Refreshments can be purchased before the film begins but not during the movie. Refreshments include popcorn, snacks, alcohol and coffee along with sodas. I understand that they sometimes serve dinner. The picture quality is beautiful, the seats are comfortable and they do not allow texting or talking during the film. The theater itself is an old Spanish style building, which was actually used as a confederate hospital in 1862....pretty cool! We thoroughly enjoyed the show and felt very comfortable. We will definitely visit again!

It seems that the interior has been somewhat refurbished. it looked like there was new flooring in the back (where the tables and chairs are). Also, the murals on the side walls seem to have been cleaned. We were told there is no longer a projectionist as the films are now digital. The feature was "Land, Ho" an independent film, as most are. The films are shown for 1 week, beginning on Friday. There is food for sale--cake, coffee, soda, popcorn, and now wine. The room is rather small for a movie theater, mankind an intimate space. Shows begin at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 6:45.

Love Love Love this theatre! you have a choice of theatre seats, table/chairs or sofa. If you want more popcorn, you can self serve and not disturb anyone! Great place!

Like the value for the price considering we are retired and counting pennies, nickels, and dimes these days with the rise in local taxes.

The FT was such a nice place to relax, and watch foreign films of the week (some in English or Subtitles). We caught a matinee, was reasonable $ 6.00. Was told it has been around since 1905 and it is a non profit group that runs the FT. You have a choice of bistro type table seatings, bar style, and of course the traditional theater seats. The woman in the concession were sweet, you could tell they enjoyed there work they were laughing and all smiles. Recommend you come a bit early parking in the area hard to find, it's there you just have to park around the nice neighborhood. Over all ambience of taking the back roads from El Paso (farmland views) to the FT was a joy. Plan to return soon.

The Fountain Theatre reopened in early March. It shows non-mainstream films and most are very good. The showings are 7:30 in the evening. They service, coffee, desserts and wine and of course popcorn. There are small tables and chairs at the back so you can sit and enjoy your treats or regular theatre seating to enjoy your film.

100 year old murals line the walls. they basically play foreign films the one we watched was french with subtitles but they do have some in English. Awesome atmosphere. I'm definitely going back if I'm ever in the area.

This is a very old, historic theater in Mesilla, NM. It shows a variety of films and most films run for a week. The films could be foreign with subtitles or very edgy with thought and emotion provocation. Once a year, they have a film festival. You will walk into a small theater with wooden seats and seats/tables to the back of the theater. They offer pastries, pies, chips, coffee, sodas and you can take them back to your seat or table. The pies are homemade. There is a personal introduction about the film and then the film starts. I really like the staff- they seem to have a lot of passion. I would definitely recommend this as a main stop while in historic Mesilla.

The oldest adobe theater with hand painted murals. In need of restoration, but the organizers present some of the edgiest and interesting flicks in the State.

Yes, it is quirky. Yes, it is hot in summer and cold in winter, inside the theatre! But, the staff are super friendly, prices are cheapo, films are art-house, seats are comfortable, and it has character galore. And, there is an equally quirky wine bar just across the street, so you can discuss the movie afterward. The building itself is beautiful, post-card worthy. History, history, and a possible ghost. Enough said.

This lovely old adobe theater in Old Mesilla has different films each week - independent and foreign films, typically - and a wonderful volunteer staff. Popcorn is excellent, too.

Those of us living in Las Cruces consider this the piece de resistance of the area -- something not to be missed, if only to walk into and step back in history. In addition to interesting movies shown, the ambience provides the comfort of enjoying a decent coffee and cake, sitting at a table if one's lucky enough to get one, in the company of devotees of an occasional thought-provoking film or off-beat comedy in a volunteer-supported setting. Not everyone's cup of java, but for locals, a loved place to pass an evening!

Actually, it's Theatre rather than Theater. Silent films, dance companies, plays, vaudeville have been at the Theatre. Full disclosure: I'm a volunteer with the Mesilla Valley Film Society which has been operating the Fountain Theatre since 1989. Theatre screens foreign, independent and documentary films. If you're not interested in a movie, come in to see the murals painted by a Fountain.

You can see some really good indie flicks at this theater and the prices are more than reasonable. If you go in summer you'll need a fan to survive the heat (swamp coolers are worthless) and in spring, fall, and winter, you'll need a sweater or a parka! Still, the movies are worth it. Be sure to eat at Emilia's on the Plaza where the food is always fresh and always delicious. Don't be fooled by those other restaurants that claim to be GREAT, but really aren't!
