Museums have largely become managed undertakings, run by committees, monitored by government bureaucrats, and genericized by curatorial formulas and default presentation formats. No, this is not one of them. But it's not an oddball "cabinet of curiosities', either. So the visitor will be neither bored nor embarrassed by public display of an eccentric collector's accumulated packrat scavengings.Curator J.A. Norcross has assembled some of his own archeological finds, along with others that he's acquired over the years, to build a logical, coherent narration of the past five millennia. The monicker "South Jersey" refers chiefly to the museum's location, not to the scope of its exhibits. There's a room dedicated to US electoral politics: The curator, whose tour is included in the admission price, keeps abreast of presidential rankings made periodically by a panel of historians. There's a lot of competition for The Worst; Mr. Norcross will obligingly review the most recent candidates. And don't miss the agricultural section on the second floor. A couple of photographs up there are worth the climb (handicapped stair-lift available). This is an example of the small museum at its very best. There is no pandering to the lowest common denominator, no superfluous politically correct rhetoric, and no gimmicky electronics to distract or confuse. The displays are elegant, minimalistic, and bear the curator's signature without imposing a personal agenda or ideology. The museum shares the building with an American Legion post whose meeting area is separated from the exhibits by a room divider.Entry fee is collected by the curator's mother.
