This is the Middlesex County Museum located near Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway, and under the direction of the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission. The Commission sets up marvelous exhibits of a certain theme throughout the entire house, each of which stays for a little more than a year, giving reseachers and display designers time for the next exhibit. Recent themes have been FDR's New Deal period and The Golden Age. All have a relation to NJ somewhere. Addmission is free, but be sure to check the hours that the museum is open before you go. The House itself has a great history, and the people there will be happy to tell you about it.

The Cornelius Low House is part of the Middlesex County Museum system. It was built in 1741 and used as a private home for many years, presently it houses a museum with rotating exhibits with related public programs. The house itself is lovely as are the gardens (particularly in the spring and summer). While there is small parking lot which can reached directly from River Road, I would actually recommend parking behind the museum (accessing via the Rutgers Busch campus) and walking through the pretty grounds to access the museum. The museum has limited hours during the week and is open on Sundays 1-4 as well, generally there is staff historian present to help guide and answer questions. While I support any historical site that is dedicated to preserving history, I would love to see this museum focus more on the local history of the area which is very rich and interesting. The last exhibit I attended here focused on the New Deal (more on a state or national level), and while it was well done and informative, I would have liked to see more on the local side of things. Even so, Cornelius Low House is definitely worth a visit, and I would also recommend making time to stop at East Jersey Olde Towne Village a little further down River Road, which does have a great deal on local history.
